Chapter 50: Flutter Your Wings? (II)

AZRAEL'S POV

"Do you ever think of weddings?" I ask, knowing my ancestors are turning in their graves from my lack of subtlety. We were watching 'The Wedding Party', and she was in such high spirits from the laughter and bubbly in her glass, it'd seemed like a good time to ask.

She brushes my question off impatiently. "Not for myself, no. Why? You're not thinking of proposing, are you?"

Well I'm not thinking of proposing now. This is not the first time she's hinted about her opposition to weddings. Just last week, after her brother got engaged to Simone, she'd leaned into me.

"I pity them."

After my rather surprised (and affronted look,) she laughed. "What? I just think marriage is a social construct. Like, yeah, why don't we bring the law into what's supposed to be a relationship between two people? It's taking away their rights to break things off without being drawn into a long, complicated mess."
