Chapter 8

Layla

Tristan pushes through the crowd during lunch to the table that me and Rose have occupied and plops down on the chair next to me. I have a plate full of spaghetti and a ton of sandwiches and I'm gobbling food like the world is ending. I have my mask down and Tristan gives me a weird look. I catch his scent and my hands twitch on the fork.

It shouldn't be possible. I know for a fact that Caspian is my mate. I've always known. Tristan's wolf was calling out to mine. Like a connection to the soul. What mess has the moon goddess landed me in? Two mates were unheard of for hundreds of years. And then there was the great Luna Regin who was known for her bravery during the great war of Crevya for having slayed the Vampire King and saving the entire North American clan. Luna Regin had two mates. While the Alpha Saul was her true mate, Warrior John was her soul mate. Oh yeah, I've done my history lessons well.

I take a deep breath and crinkle my nose at the deep cherry and wine scent. Having two mates has made my mission more difficult. It is a relief that Tristan and Caspian are not eighteen yet. There is no way the pack is going to let me leave and pursue my dreams if they find out about the mate bonds. An Alpha will need his Luna by his side and Tristan was his best friend. Caspian would never let Tristan be cheated out of the mate bond.

I'm hit by a vivid memory. It seemed like Tristan's wolf was pushing the memory. A little girl in a flowy yellow dress and a curly brown haired boy holding hands in what looked like a park. The boy sticks a white flower on her hair and the girl smiles wide and tries to put her tiny fingers through his brown ringlets when suddenly the boy is pushed down by a taller, black-haired boy with green eyes. The new boy pulls at her hair and stomps on the flower that falls down.

"Earth to Layla". I'm startled and I look around to find everybody staring at me. We have quite a little crowd now at our table. Makes sense since we have Tristan, Keiran, Rose and now Josh in our table. Huh, where did he come in from. "So?" Tristan looked expectantly at me. "Umm, were you saying something? I'm sorry I zoned out". I didn't need to be as wary of Tristan as I needed to be of Caspian. Caspian was the heir. It would be against the pack law for the true mate of an Alpha to leave his side. "Now that Keiran and Rose are going to be going back from school together and since Caspian and Josh have to leave early for the pack training, I could drop you home". He looks into my eyes and I find myself falling into the deep pools of his chocolate brown eyes. I look away and nod. By the time I'm done with my lunch and wear my mask, there is a commotion in the hall and I twist my head to see what all the noise is about and see Caspian standing near the entrance with Josh. Cassie and her posse of girls have wrapped themselves around Caspian and Josh. "Oh here they are. I wonder what took them so long." Tristan whispers into my ears. I'm taken aback by his closeness but it fills my heart with a strange warmth.
