Chapter 18

“Charlie!” Mom’s voice echoes down the hallway and I spin in my desk chair and turn towards my door. We haven’t spoken much since last night. She was gone this morning when I left for school but she was home when I got back after volleyball practice. “Charlie!” She calls again and I get out of my chair. I walk down the hallway to find her bag in the living room and see her at the kitchen table packing her work bag.

“Going somewhere?” I slide into a stool at the kitchen counter but swivel the chair to face her. Mom pauses what she is doing and looks up at me.

“Yes,” she sets down what she’s packing to give me her full attention. “The client I went to present to over the weekend, called us back, and now I am being sent back to close the deal. Hopefully. Anyway, while I am out of town you will not be staying here alone.”

I begin to protest, “mom, seriously? I…” but she lifts her hand to stop me from talking.
