Chapter 30

Mom looks up at me and tries to put the energy field around us again but she’s too tired. I smell smoke and look back to see the old yellow house is now up in flames. Mom sees it too but stays silent as tears once again fall down her cheeks.

“Erin, surrender now and Charlie won’t suffer the same fate you have,” Grandmother’s voice pounds my head and I squeeze my eyes shut. I try to focus on my own thoughts and the loudest one right now is screaming for us to get away from here. I open my eyes and see Mom struggling to hold herself together.

“Come on, we have to go,” I grab her arm and help her stand up. We’re both exhausted already but we have to keep moving. I try to create an energy field around us but I can’t figure out how. I want to ask Mom to help but she’s too tired and there’s no time.

“Ah, there you are,” Grandmother’s voice becomes more focused and clear. The woman from the memories of the town, strides through the cemetery, coming toward us.
