“Mom,” I say when she picks up her phone.
“Charlie? What’s wrong?” Mom’s voice comes through the phone sounding very worried. The worry is not unjustified.
“Can you come home? Max had a lot to tell me.” I admit and I hear her suck in a gasp.
“Charlie, I told you not to confront him without me,” Mom scolds me but I hear her quickly packing up over the phone.
“I know, and I wasn’t going to but he pulled me aside and well, I’m headed home now,” I tell her as I head out the door of the school. I take off jogging to get home.
When I get home, I am out of breath but Mom’s car is already in the driveway. I see her pacing around inside the house then she darts over to the kitchen counter where her laptop is sitting open. I knock on the door when I push it open.
