ELLIE
Around us, the house was silent and still.
I hated it. I hated the not knowing and the waiting.
In one corner of our room, Sarah was curled up on a love seat, sniffling and cradling her belly.
In the center of the room, Kate was pacing back and forth and looking at the walls like a feral vampire was going to charge through them at any second.
I was staring at the door.
I hated everything about this. I shouldn’t be hiding. This was my fault for indulging Kate. She wouldn’t have broken the cage if I hadn’t been there with her.
But this was Kate’s fault, too. I was done taking responsibility for her stupidity. After this, she was going to have to fix herself because I was done.
All of a sudden, what sounded like a thousand screeching howls filled the air. They were muffled by our room, but they still raised all the hair on my body.
I sucked in a shaky breath and clenched my fists.
