COHEN
Dr. Val said something, but I didn't respond.
I just stared.
Stared at my dead mate.
My baby was crying in Rain's arms, but I didn't care.
Tears ran down my cheeks, but I didn't care.
I didn't care about anything but watching my mate's chest.
Nothing.
Why wasn't it moving?
I'd given her so much blood.
I stepped up to her side and gripped her hand in mine as I fell to my knees beside her. I pressed my head to her hand.
"Please," I begged. "Please, Ellie."
The door behind me slammed open, and Kate screamed. She charged forward and stopped beside me. I didn't bother looking up at her expression as I returned my stare to my mate's chest.
Lance wrapped an arm around Kate and held her as she sobbed. He didn't explain that there was still a slight chance. He didn't want to give her false hope. Those had been my orders.
I didn't care anymore. All I cared about was that first vampiric breath.
Ellie's body flinched, and everyone stilled.
She flinched again.
