Depth felt the pain slithering through his body, exposing him to a web extreme and excruciating pain. It felt horrendous.
"If you die you die. Will you cheat death?"those were the words he last heard before the darkness engulfed him, robbing him of the presence of light. Was he dead? He did not know, but if it was, it sure felt as peaceful as it did painful. He could however feel the gentle lift off the ground; he also felt it when his body was slowly placed on something. Was the grim reaper picking him up to take him to hell?He was never a good person, so maybe that was where he was going to end up.Depth lack the answers to the questions that pilled up on his mind. Thoughts angrily swirled around his mind mercilessly causing a sharp pain.He was already getting exhausted from thinking. And he wondered why death did not as well rob him of his shouts just as it did the light of day.
The vivid picture of his father's disgusted face came to him. His father had leaned forward, his face resting on his palm. His mother, her hair perfect and her dress detailing her delicate nature, stood behind his father with a distorted look. A mixture of disgust, anger and fear. Depth remember his mother's betrayal. His shield and resting place. She had forsaken her only child and joined forces with her husband to persecute him. Her denial of love towards him at his moment of weakness and pain hurt more than being continuously ripped apart with a dull blade. For heaves sake, she was his MOTHER!
"You are no longer my son," his mother had said to him in a timid and shaken voice when they dropped him at the run down orphanage. Abandoning him completely. He was a failure of a man in his fathers eyes. No, in truth his father as well, thought of him as a failure of a human being.A disgrace and trash to his very core. Then began the continuous cycle of torture by his new "parents".The caretakers of the shady run down orphanage. Oh they loved him alright. As they had now found an unloved free punching bag and servant.
He could still feel the small yet repetitive pain of the cigarettes buts being put out on the soles of his feet. The sound the metal rod made when it landed on his skin was still fresh in his mind. The dingy mouldy smell of the room he was locked in almost daily still danced in the air. It never left him.And the hunger, oh the hunger that had long become familiar to him and a friend in his times of wanting to die. It kept on reminding him that he was alive and not dreaming.
Yet shockingly, this only fueled the fire that burned in him. His will to live through it and thrive at the end with no regrets in life. He wanted to live. Not just live but thrive magnificently. To shine bright like a star. So when he got the chance, he made a run for it, out of that hell of an orphanage in the middle of the night. He trekked for days on ends, hoping to make it to safety until he found himself in a thick foggy forest. Even when the fog slowed him down, he never stopped, until he felt his feet step on tarmac. The something heavy, fast, hit him.A sharp pain rushed through his body and the lights went out.
"Why do you even try?" a clear low voice asked him. He didn't know who it belonged to but it antagonized him.
"You are weak and pathetic. You stand to gain nothing and your struggle is useless. You lack any talent what so ever. So why? Why do you try so hard? Your will always fail to achieve your desires. You will get nothing. Not love. Not companionship. Not strength nor happiness,"the voice mocked. It was loud and clear. Stabbing Depth where it hurt most. No mercy. Only detest. And then anger begun to swirl in him.
Depth could feel his emotions running wild. Anger, sadness and despair. He knew better than anyone what he was. He was a good for nothing and a sad little boy who had nothing. He was weak. He was a bad person undeserving of love. Yet still in the back of his mind he was always hoping for a savior. Even if his savior was the villain. He didn't care.
"Does that mean that I should die then?" Depth asked the voice in his head," Why must I be made into the monster? Why must I give up? Will death save me from the pain? Should I just die and give the people that hurt me the satisfaction of seeing how I lost? Is that all that I can be? "
"Do you think that you are worth anything child?"
"I am worth nothing. But that doesn't mean that my life will not change. "
"You are being delusional..."
"So what if I am being delusional! I will still live on! I will live! And no one can stop me!"
"Then open your eyes and show me your true worth!"
Christopher leaned towards the boy who body lay motionless on a bed. He slowly took up the boys hand and held it. Pain. Helix could feel the emotional pain that the boy felt. A miracle. That was what the boy was, as unlike vampires, wolves are unable to turn humans into one of them. It had been theoretically thought of but never put into practice as all test subjects had all died within seconds of being bitten. The boy was the proof that it could be done. Before him was a weak looking boy who had fought off death, survived his poison and became the first dire-wolf that was originally human. Indeed, the boy was special.
But there was a down side. As Helix was an alpha, his bite cause the boy to forcibly become his beta hence he was mentally connected to him. At the moment Helix shared the mental pain that the boy was suffering. He squeezed the boys hand gently. The boy had now become his to protect. A strange fate for the two.
"The boy is a miracle,"Mr. Lanez remarked. He was the family doctor of the Prides. A small smile had spread on his face. He had witnessed history for the dire-wolves. The feeling to probe and experiment on the boy had been awakened. His excitement however, disappeared when he met Helix's black eyes that seemed to suck out the energy in him. Reminding him that he was in the presence of a being feared by many dire-wolves including himself. He slowly swallowed the saliva in his mouth and forced himself to focus on Christopher. The older brother and the tranquilizer of the monster, Helix.
Christopher smiled at him gently. Lanez was momentarily relieved of his fear when he saw Christophers gentle green eyes that resembled emeralds. They were captivating and gave the illusion of kindness and sympathy to all. He never understood how such a perfect being was related to a monster like Helix. However the physical resemblance between the two brothers was very evident. They look identical. The only thing that distinguished them was the difference in their eye and hair color.
Noticing that he had stayed in the room for too long, given that he had long finished his assignment, Mr. Lanez excused himself.Leaving the brothers and the boy in the room.
Helix then began retelling what had occurred to his brother, as Christopher attentively listened. When he finished, Christopher slowly patted Helix on the back and gently hugged him, making Helix relax slightly.Christopher could tell that his brother was having a hard time.
"You saved him." Christopher finally said with a gentle smile. As he looked at his younger brother with respect and admiration before leaving the room.
Helix watched the boy. The boys heart beat seemed to align with Helix's own. A sign that the connection between the two had been formed.
"Don't worry. Your are ok. I will make sure you are if not." Helix told the boy whose face slowly began to gain color. He fought death and won. A miracle indeed.
