The kids were thrilled that they got to ride in the backseat of a police car. They had been cheering for the first hour we drove. I glanced outside the window, the city we arrived in now looked really industrial. We had been driving for hours and the kids were sleeping in my arms. Dean had called me several times, but I did not answer him.
I couldn't talk to him freely, so I thought it would be best not to answer at all. The car came to a stop. "There we are," the female cop said. Her name was Mona, I found out during the ride. She just finished school and had been talking about moving in with her boyfriend. Her future seemed so bright.
My mother had been quiet the entire ride. She cradled Zion in her arms and carried him outside of the car. I did the same with my youngest.
We stood before a big house, with closed curtains. "This is it," Mona said. She rang the door bell and an other woman opened the door. She looked like she walked straight out of a seventies movie with her wide yellow pants, busy printed blouse and green bandana around her head.
"Melissa and Raya right?" The woman smiled. "My name is Axel, we were expecting you," she said. The cops said their goodbye's and my mom and I walked in. "I think it would be best if I show you to your room right away," the woman said.
Her smile did not reach her eyes. We walked up three stairs, it was kind of heavy with my boy in my arms.
"This will be your room for the night," Axel said. There were four bunkbeds on each side of the walls. Oddly enough, the beds looked like a complete hazard, because you could easily fall out of them. There was no railing.
My mom and I eyed each other. "It will probably be best to put the boys on one of the lower beds," she said making a face. We both burst out in hysteric laughter. My mom and I put the kids down to sleep.
"I think I need to rest as well," said mom. "That's alright," I told her. I paced up and down the hallway for an hour. Meanwhile my phone kept buzzing, and my phone said I missed fourty messages. They were all from Dean.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and called him back. I was startled when he immediately picked up. "Where are you?" he shot without saying hello.
"Hi," I said sheepishly. "Where are you?" he asked me almost in an angry tone. "I am at a secure location…" I quietly said. "I know that," he said wary. "They would not let me know where you were," Dean said wary.
"I am not allowed to tell you either," I scraped my throat as a woman and a small girl eyed me when they passed through the hall. I kindly smiled back.
"You were supposed to wait for me," Dean said solemnly. "I know…" I breathed. I closed my eyes, trying to get a clear picture of his face. "Turn your mobile camera on," said Dean as if he could read my thoughts.
I pressed the button and Dean appeared on my screen. He was so incredibly handsome. "Hey," I said and bit my lip.
"Hey princess," Dean cooed. "Where are your mom and the boys?" asked Dean. "They are sleeping," I told him. I flipped the camera, so that it would face towards the room instead of me, and cracked the door open a little.
Dean raised an eyebrow. "That does not seem safe," he told me. I knew that.
"I am coming to get you," Dean announced. I quickly closed the door, afraid my mom would hear him.
"What?" I asked baffled. "You can't stay there with the boys, this will be a core-memory," he said and added; "I do not want them to have memories like these."
"Dean, I know you mean well… but this way we can get the help we need," I tried to explain to him.
"I mean.. they will help me with the legal stuff, in six months we will get a house..." I went on.
"A house across the country!" Dean said skeptically. "How will you finish your studies?" he asked me. "I probably need to switch university's," I told him.
Dean was quiet. "You are not coming back to me, are you?" asked Dean. "Dean…" I muttered. "It is hardly that simple," I complained. "I will take care of you and your mom," he vowed.
"Don't be silly," I said and threw my head back against the wall. I closed my eyes, trying to clear my mind. "Melissa, you know that I am being very much serious," he told me in all earnest. "Dean, you can not take care of my whole entire family!" I said way too loud.
"Sure I can," he insisted. "Even if you could, I would not want you to," I made clear. It would make sense that he was rich, but taking care of four people, whom you are not related to, seemed a bit too much. Besides, I could take care of myself.
"Don't worry Dean, it will be fine. In time you'll see that," I tried to convince him.
"No it will not, and in time you will see that I am right," said Dean. "I will talk to you in a bit," he told me. "Bye my darling," he said and hung up the phone.
I paced up and down the hallway for more than an hour. My mom and the boys were still sleeping. "Miss, there is a man outside to see you. He says that he is a friend. Do we need to call the police," a frail woman with black long hair asked me. She looked Indian.
My heart started to beat frantically. Could Mason have found us? I would not find it beyond him. My palms started to get sweaty.
