"What shall we do?" the tiny woman asked. I shook my head… "I don't know," I breathed. I took out my phone and called Dean. "Dean!" I said with panic in my voice. "Hey princess," he endeared me.
"Mason," I shrieked. "Mason is here," I said in fear. "What do you mean?" Dean questioned.
"I… I think he is in front of the shelter," I told him. "Oh", Dean said lighthearted. "It's just me," Dean said. "Wait what?!" I questioned. "What are you doing here," I frowned. The woman looked at me skeptically.
"There are no men allowed in here," she explained to me. "I see," I said and bit my lip. "That's alright love, I am just coming to get you and your family out of here," he said.
I sighed heavily. It was sweet what he was trying to do… but it really was not in my best interest at all.
"Dean, I-" I closed my eyes, not knowing what to say. I sighed and walked down the stairs. "I'm coming," I told him. When I opened the door, his cologne hit me.
Dean was wearing a white blouse, which he rolled up at the sleeves. The top was casually unbuttoned and his eyes seemed to be wary.
Both of his hands immediately cupped my face, his deep blue eyes pierced through mine. Dean seemed upset. "You are not coming with me, are you?" he assumed.
I bit my lip. "The boys are sleeping," I whispered. "We can wait until they wake," he said trying to make a point.
"Can we walk," I offered. "I don't know the way though, so we should remain close," I added. Dean followed me. "Why didn't you wait for me?" Dean asked solemnly. "Because…" I started to say and came to a stop.
The streets were busy, I turned around to look at him. "I can not live in the moment," I said thoughtfully. "The boys need perspective and it seemed evidently that we can not return to our home, so I need to make sure that we can start over." I tried to explain.
"Starting over does not require for you and your children to stay in that God forsaken place," he said incredulous. "It's not that bad," I said defensively. Dean raised both his eyebrows, glaring at me.
Okay, I was not getting anywhere. "They help me get another house, help me with the legal stuff…" I trailed off. Dean took my hand and pulled me towards him.
"You need a house, which is safe from Mason," said Dean and he put a string of hair behind my ear. My whole body felt tense with electricity. "Yes," I breathed.
Dean let me go with one hand, while he fidgeted something out of his back pocket. He gave me a set of folded papers. "What is this?" I asked him.
"Open it," he whispered. I unfolded the set of papers and froze in shock. The papers said that I owned a house at the estate that was owned by the fraternity.
My mouth fell open. "The estate is highly secured at all times, no one goes in and out without knowing," he almost vowed. I was speechless. "How?" I breathed.
"I mean… " I said unable to complete the sentence. "Dean… I mean… I can't… This is… what?!" I spoke incomprehensible.
I stared at the paper. It seemed legit. "Why would the fraternity give me a house on their estate?" I thought out loud. Dean seemed uncomfortable as he was tugging at his collar.
He twitched his lips a little, like he had a hard time fessing up. "Well…" began Dean and scraped his throat. "I own the estate," he blurted out.
Eyes wide, I was nailed to the ground. The estate was massive, with a big chunk of forest and several buildings on the property.
"Oh," I mouthed.
"I know it is not much, it has just five bedrooms, but it is sheltered from the main house… So the students won't bother you. I mean, it is an old building and it will need a little renovation, but it is in the contract that I will provide for that," he babbled on.
"Dean I do not have money to buy a house like that," I shrugged. "No, no no," Dean said with a lot of hand gestures. "It is yours," stated Dean. He pointed at a part on the paper which said that I owned the house and that it was gifted to me. "You just need to sign the papers…" smiled Dean.
He owned the estate?
"And I know the house next to it is even smaller," Dean mumbled as he flipped through the pages, "But the small cabin next to it is yours as well, for you mom. You know," he raddled on.
"Dean…I don't get it," I shook my head. "You said that it was not appropriate for the boys to be at the fraternity" I shook my head. Dean smoothed out the skin between my eyes.
He seemed to think. Cars passed us by. "Well… They technically will not be at the fraternity," Dean smiled playfully. "I uhm… I don't really know what to say Dean… this is… I mean…"
"I know that you can take care of yourself," murmured Dean against my lips. "You are so full of fire, making a future for your boys. I admire that about you. But let me do this for you, and for the children. Everyone needs a sunny day at times, right?" his eyes lit up, like a million brilliant stars.
"And I confess, it is a little bit of self-interest as well," he said sheepishly. I was afraid to ask what he meant by that.
Dean handed me a pen. Again it was a pen with his name inscribed. "You want me to sign this here, on the middle of the street," I laughed a little.
"Yes," Dean immediately replied. "Before you run off again," he accused me. I folded my arms and pouted my lips. A grin appeared on his face. He seemed amused.
"Fine then," I surrendered, rolling my eyes. There was no way he was taking no for an answer, it was clear he was not going away without us either way. I took the pen and Dean turned around offering his back as a substitute table to place my signature.
