Chapter 306

Vorbuk did not any time to request sending Chete somewhere to meet with him. He could hear the sound of those footsteps as he approached the training ground. There was no sign of him trying to hide his presence at the training ground. Cambion were not a race that could easily be controlled by others due to their demonic bloodline. They often acted as they pleased.

"So it seems I have missed a great display been his majesty and his highness." Chete's voice was not one of rudeness. Underneath it hid a sarcastic tone as the cambion had no real interest in royalty or noble affairs. The only interactions with nobility the cambion had were ones he enticed himself for personal gains.

Ashley, upon noticing the cambion approaching the training, stomped over to the cambion and grabbed him by the back of his clothes before asking his master, "Should I dispose of him, master~?"

"Are you trying to be suicidal? Why are you wandering around the palace without permission?" Vorbuk asked Chete with a shadow over his expression. He felt like anyone who sneaked into the palace was just asking to be killed. The members of his group were all crazy. They gave him the feeling that any trespassers would be killed before questioning if he was not around.

Chete was calm, a slight flicker of panic in his eyes, as he maneuvered his body to twist itself out of Ashley's grasp in order to step closer to Vorbuk, "There are two things about me that make me who I am. One, I never make deals I do deem worthy of the exchange. Two, I never wander into places I do not guarantee I can escape from with my life intact."

Why does he seem nervous about something? Vorbuk thought to himself. It felt like something was off about the look in Chete's eyes. After realizing this feeling he glanced over at the direction of Prince Leo. Briefly exchanging a look with each other that showed they both could probably sense it.

"Is there a reason you came to see me? What are you doing here, Chete?" Vorbuk asked the cambion without a care.

Why did the gods ever want me to connect with this cambion? Vorbuk could not understand why he was suppose to bring the cambion close to his group. Why was he suppose to ask the cambion for help when it did no good in the end? The wolf did not trust the half blood demon before him.

[ Even gods can experience betrayal... Sometimes a mortal can be important even if they are not loyal to us specifically. ]

Betrayal? What are you talking about? Vorbuk thought to himself as he listened to the god's voice that sent him messages. The god seemed to be sensitive to the subject.

[ Chete was not chosen to serve the host out of his loyalty. ]

If Chete was not meant to become a companion in the upcoming battle... What was the purpose of being so interested in the cambion? Vorbuk pondered. The only thing he knew about Chete was that he did not get along with Bredret. There was a deeper story between those two that caused the dragon to greatly hate the cambion.

Chete felt like he saw the new Theapan King, Vorbuk, getting distracted as he replied, "I was in the area and thought I would deliver you a bit of news I overheard from Cadirade."

Vorbuk's eyes flickered with a slight red glow as he felt something strange from the cambion. There was something coming from the cambion that felt disgusting. What is that disgusting feeling that comes from the cambion? It seems to come from his very soul.

It felt cold, sticky, and sent shivers down Vorbuk's back.

[ Due to heightened senses towards souls of the undead, Host can sense all those in which the cambion has consumed over time. ]

I can sense the souls he has consumed..? Vorbuk thought to himself as he tried to understand. Does that mean that Chete consumes souls..?

"What news did you want to give us?" Prince Leo asked before Vorbuk could have a chance to speak up about the information.

Chete glanced over at the prince before turning back to Vorbuk and answering, "I would suggest you give up this suicidal mission you both are on but I doubt you would heed my advice. Therefore, I would like to warn you that Curtis has sent me here to find Prince Leo."

"What-?!" Vorbuk, Leo, and Princess Isis were all stunned by the cambion's choice to admit the reason he showed up. Why would he admit that reason for coming so openly?

Ashley on the other hand was not as obviously stunned by the cambion's reason for showing up in front of them. His reaction was to summon his blood scythe. The sharp blade pointed straight at the cambion's throat, muttering the words, "Try anything and I will slit your throat before you can blink."

"Funny." Chete laughed sarcastically, raising his fingers to carefully push the blade away from his neck, while saying, "I was trying to warn you. I am not the only one around as well... Accept my warning or do not. That choice is your own."

"Why warn us?" Prince Leo asked. Why is the cambion warning us about his betrayal?

Chete clicked his tongue and replied, "I was trying to show a form of respect. We had a previous arrangement and I have a sense of respect for my customers when I make deals."

"... Respect." Vorbuk wanted to laugh as he muttered that word under his breath.

Everyone paused in silence before Chete finally spoke up and asked, "Did you say something?"

"I thought it was funny that you can say you have respect for your customers." Vorbuk replied honestly as he started to understand. That feeling that he got from Chete. The disgusting feeling of all those souls that came from Chete made him want to vomit.

"What do you mean by laughing at that?" Chete felt insulted.

"What do you charge your customers usually, Chete?" Vorbuk asked in a demanding tone.

The wolf was beginning to understand why the dragon hated the demon so deeply. That hatred ran deep and it was a heavy burden for Bredret. He thought back to all those times that he saw the dragon get upset over the fact that Celeste had made a deal with the cambion. The deal had lead to her death but Bredret hated the cambion more then simply blaming him for her death. In fact the dragon wanted to kill the cambion personally whenever he saw him.

It was deep hatred fueled by he price that Celeste had been forced to pay in order for the deal to be made from the beginning. The dragon detested the cambion for what he had taken from her.

Chete was startled when he was asked that question and hesitated before responding, "Why do you ask?"

"I think you take a very heavy price from them," Vorbuk pushed for him to answer, "What do you charge them normally Chete?"

Whatever guise they adopt, they have one terrible purpose: to devour your soul. These demons are often said to target the weak, preying on those who are sick or dying, but also the healthy. Nothing calls out to them quite like pain. Feelings of sadness and heartache, as does even saying their name aloud. Once an individual becomes a target, they can't avoid their fate. Unless someone else is willing to sacrifice themselves to the demon.

They hunted their prey by making deals with them. Those deals sealed their fate with the demon. Chete was only a half demon but he could not outrun his bloodline. His race had to feed and becoming a demon of trade gave him the means to never go hungry. The more he fed the longer his lifespan would become.

Chete knew he had no choice but to admit it out loud, "I feed on a part of the mortal's soul."
