Chapter 307

They hunted their prey by making deals with them. Those deals sealed their fate with the demon. Chete was only a half demon but he could not outrun his bloodline. His race had to feed and becoming a demon of trade gave him the means to never go hungry. The more he fed the longer his lifespan would become.

Chete knew he had no choice but to admit it out loud, "I feed on a part of the mortal's soul."

Vorbuk felt complicated as he heard the cambion admit to it, "That is someone's soul, Chete. How could you do that to... You did that to Celeste, right? The reason that Bredret detests you is because you fed on her soul."

"That is correct." Chete did not try to deny the truth about why Bredret hated him. In fact he did not feel particularly great about what he had done. Over time he had come to feel burdened by his means of survival as a cambion. Unless he fed on souls he would cease to live.

Prince Leo spoke up while he shuddered at the thought of what Chete had been doing to others, "Did Celeste know what you asked of her?"

"Bredret knew because he has always been aware of what kind of demon race I come from... I warned that girl what the price was for the deal. She took it regardless." Chete explained as if he was trying to justify his own actions to himself after all the time that had passed.

Chete felt time was being wasted on events that had long passed, he proceeded to say what he wanted to get across to them, "I only came to give you a warning. This was done out of respect."

"Who are you here with, Chete?" Vorbuk asked while taking a chance on the cambion's honesty.

"Hoh..." Chete was someone who believed in his loyalty to his customers. He was not someone who would give everything away about someone he was working for. In his line of trade he had his own code to live by, smiling he said apologetically, "I can not give away customer details so easily."

"Do you really think you will get away from here without telling us everything?" Ashley's brow twitched as his face had a scary smile on it while speaking to him.

The one with the best chance at keeping the cambion present would be Ashley. He was on par in strength with Chete. However that did not mean it would be as easy as they would have hoped. If Chete was to put up a fight it was possible for Ashley to loose against him. They did not know much about Chete aside from him being a half demon, cambion.

Chete smiled because he had already told them once, he repeated it again, "Have you forgotten already? I never go somewhere I do not believe I can not escape from in an emergency."

"If that was true how did you end up becoming a dog for Prince Curtis?" Prince Leo mocked.

Chete frowned and replied, "I am no dog! I made a deal with him."

That deal was made to spare my life... But I can not go against the code of my life's trade work. Chete grit his teeth as he thought to himself about it.

"Ashley." Vorbuk called out the vampire's name. Without a word more he knew the servant would understand what command he was being given. Do not let the cambion leave!

Ashley knew at the sound of his name being called that his master wanted him to act. From a short glance at his master's expression he understood.

I must stop the cambion from escaping! Ashley's mind was set instantly.

"Unfortunately," Chete taunted the vampire, "I have no intention of allowing you to stop me from leaving here today."

CAW! CAW! CAW!

The sound of sudden birds cawing from all around caused everyone to look over and catch sight of the flock of crows. Flying in a heavy swarm the crows flew straight down in their direction.

"Chete! Ashley, stop him!" Prince Leo called out when he noticed it was an attempt for the cambion to escape.

"Master!" Ashley called out to Vorbuk as he checked in the direction of his king.

"Ah!" The Princess ducked behind Prince Leo as the swarm of crows flocked over the training grounds. There was so many that it was difficult to see anything. The surroundings were becoming dark as the rays from the sun were hidden behind a roof made of crow.

The prince called forth his flame with one word, "Fireball!"

The flame he called forth slowly began to expand as he pushed his mana harder. He wanted to block the wild crows from him and the princess. Those crows would have a hard time flying through my flames... Prince Leo thought. Trying hard to help protect the princess.

BAM!

The prince stiffen momentarily when he saw Princess Isis punch a crow in the face. It had been flying directly at her from an angle that the prince had not been able to block. As a werewolf she was not going to let herself be easily overtaken by the swarm of crows. Though she trusted the prince's skills to help protect each other. Prince Leo realized instantly that she did not need his protection. Rather she simply was looking to help one another remain safe.

Vorbuk could hear everyone as he focused his hearing. Sounds of flapping wings, the cawing of the crows, and everyone's panic filled his ears. It was not difficult for him to distinguish the difference between them.

Whooosh!

The vampire, Ashley, rushed right by him. He was heading on Vorbuk's order to try and capture the cambion, Chete. As he ran after Chete, Ashley's scythe sliced through the crows from the left and right as he moved. Blood scattering through the air and staining the grounds red.

Careful around master~ Ashley thought to himself when he was close by Vorbuk.

The vampire had halted his weapon when he neared Vorbuk. Merely knocking the crows in the head in order to knock them out or kill them. He did not wish to dirty his master's clothes. It was not until he had cleared far enough away from Vorbuk that he resumed his blood thirsty killing of the crows.

Chete saw the vampire coming for him as he began to run away. His eyes flashing with a golden hue as the crows swarmed heavily behind him. Flooding back against Ashley like a powerful ocean wave he was forced to a halt.

Slamming the end of his scythe into the ground he held on tight. Crows seemed to bury him beneath them. Nobody could see the vampire to know how he was doing. Sounds of crows cawing seemed to haunt the palace training grounds. It was a short time that seemed to feel extremely long.

As the birds flocked away from the training grounds they scattered in all directions. Chete was long gone as he escaped during the distraction. Vorbuk was not worried about Chete. His worries were set on the vampire, Ashley, as he rushed over to check on his condition.
