It was mandatory for the werewolves to transform on every full moon night. In the initial days after the curse, they would transform as soon as their eyes would meet the full moon or when the moonlight would fall onto their skin. It was an inevitable phenomenon for them and none of them how to control it. But as the generations passed, they were able to resist their transformation for a limited time, any more than that and they would be dead.
Because of the control on the transformation, the werewolves were able to maintain themselves by gathering in a secluded area for the transformation, so they would not harm any innocents.
Deimos sprinted furiously amongst the darkest corners of the forest, tracing back the path where he had earlier asked his servants to put clothes for him, so he could dress up after he transforms back into his human form and return back to his kingdom properly. His senses were heightened in his wolf form and he could feel the nature around him in its truest form.
The night time inside the heart of the forest seemed like a labyrinth crowded with trees and the land strewn across with wet mud which made squelching sounds now and then. He could catch whiffs of different herbs and wildflowers infused with the forest air to grab the attention of the travellers to bewilder them into their trap. Although for him it was easy to distinguish among the several things he saw while he ran like a fury.
And amongst all these scents, views and sounds, he suddenly heard soft whimpers coming from a particular direction. He immediately brought a pause to his sprint and focused on the sound. It was just another ordinary cry but it was able to bring stillness to his rather pacing heart.
He wanted to reach out to that voice, to discover who it belonged to. But before that he wanted to turn back into his human form so as to not scare away the person who was crying. He stopped and inhaled sharply the scent and waited for his body to turn back to normal.
His bones cracked again, the ligaments and muscles restoring back to normal, his fangs, claws and wolf fur disappearing simultaneously and finally after a few seconds he was back in his human form.
Deimos was crouched down on the ground and having gone through a transformation he was still panting from the impact it had on his body.
He caught his breath and then stood up, his sense of smell and hearing were still focused on the whimpers and he began taking steps in that specific direction, growing curious every second as to who could it belong to and what the person must be doing here at this hour of the night.
Something caught in his foot as he moved and he realized those were the clothes his servants have prepared for him. He pulled on the clothes immediately and then continued walking to where the cries were coming from.
Selene had no idea where she has brought herself while experiencing a hysteric. And she did not have the foggiest idea that she had caught herself a spectator, a rather dangerous one. Right now, the only thought that occupied her mind was the future she didn't wish to look forward to. All she was wishing for was some way she could go back in time and avoid her father to make such a decision. But somethings are not in our hand and she knew it very well.
But as soon as she heard a twig cracking, she froze on her spot and feared if it was some wild animal who had followed her voice. And just then she realized she was far from the castle of Santok and amidst the dark forest. And even if she cried for help, no one would come to her rescue. Because finding help in the forest was like looking for a needle in the deep waters, being aware of the fact that it was impossible.
She immediately stood up and accessed her surroundings for the first time now. In front of her where the sound come from was the dark forest and behind her was the cliff and a river. Her mind began calculating her chances of returning to the castle safely and they seemed slim to none. She obviously couldn't run in the direction where the sound came from, so the only option she was left with was to jump down the cliff. The current of the river was serene and it would be a safer choice even if she wets herself in the process.
The cracking and squelching sounds were much nearer than they were before and Selene was aware that whatever it was, it was advancing towards her.
