Declined the Offer

"I would just like to talk about your job offer at Holmes Industry." Her eyes widened.

"How did you know." I looked at her closely, She looked nervous again but a little guilty.

"They rang me yesterday." She nodded. "Oh." I smiled at her.

"Ellise, you can take the job if you want. I'm not going to make you stay, but I have valued your assistance and support. It's people like you that make up the structure of Williams & Williams." Ellise looked nervous again and was fiddling with the hem of her skirt.

"I declined the offer. I rang them this morning and told them I wouldn't work for them." She finally made eye contact with me. "Why?" I asked simply because I didn't understand why she would decline such an offer. "Because, I can learn so much more here. Plus, I like it here now." A small chuckle slipped past my lips. When Ellise had first arrived here as an intern, she'd hated the place. "You've changed." I nodded and she nodded. "I grew up."                        I understood what she meant. Sometimes, everyone loses faith in you, and whilst you're trying to prove them wrong, you prove yourself wrong. Or at least learn some important things.

"We should go home." I said looking up to find Ellise smiling at me. She nodded and stood up, stretching her arms above her head. "Katherine, Do you really think he won't fall in love with you?" I looked up at her, staring straight into her eyes. "I really hope not, because I won't fall in love with him." She nodded and left my office. Sighing I begun packing up. "I hope neither of us fall in love." I said to myself as I pulled on my coat.

I slept till eight the next morning, before getting up and going for a run. After a hot shower, I settled in front of my desk at home. My home office was smaller, and lighter. I had white shelving, and the walls were painted a pastel blue. I didn't work in my home office very often. Only sundays really. But having it meant I could work 7 days a week, every week.

Everyday, I would wake up early, go for a hot shower, get dressed and head out the door. I was always at work by 8 unless I had other things on such as meeting my lawyer or if I was forced into things by my mother.

Monday was no different and I was at my desk 8am to 7pm. Tuesday was similar. Wednesday, I got in at twelve as I had to go with my sister to get her dress fitted. I was there till 9pm though. By thursday, I had lost steam for the week, and invited Ellise in for some early morning chit chat .

"You're the only person I've ever worked for who just has a chat with their assistant." She said after discovering I'd called her in just to talk. "I lose motivation sometimes so just need a break." I said with a small shrug as she took a seat.

"So," I asked taking a sip of my coffee. "What are you doing?" She looked around nervously. "Nothing much. You asked me to do the Christmas sale preparation so I'm busy with that and then you asked if I could sort out-"

"No, no, no. I mean your life. Not your work." She raised her eyebrows a little in shock but continued. "Well, I've started writing a book." That got my attention. "What about?" I said leaning forwards with curiosity.

Ellise's eye lit up with excitement as she began explaining the plot of a young girl finding her Mr. Darcy. "Then I have two endings, there's the one with..." She was practically out of her seat with happiness and I smiled to see her so proud and joyed at the thought of writing her own book. I once wrote my own book. It was never published as I never showed it to anyone, but I had loved the feeling of turning thoughts into words. Words that created another world.

Suddenly my phone went off, bring me back from my thoughts and interrupting Ellise.

"Do you want me to get it?" She asked standing up. I shook my head at her and she sat down again. Picking up the receiver, I answered in my most professional voice.

"Hello, Katherine Williams office." I didn't answer my phone very often. Everything went through Ellise, so I was quite nervous.

"Um, It's Liam Robinson and I would like to make an appointment."

I smiled. "Liam, It's Katherine." He lightly chuckled on the other end. "Oh, well how are you?"

I shrugged. "Not too bad. Yourself?" Ellise was looking at me. "Should I go?" She mouthed and I shrugged, "If you want." I mouthed back silently. "Fine." Liam said through the phone as Ellise stood and left my office, closing the door gently.
