Chapter 13: News Most Unwelcome

MILO’S POV

The new soldiers in the ward aren’t well. They sleep a lot and when they do, the nightmares drag them under. One calls out for his mother, his voice cracking and hiccuping on whatever memory is terrorizing him. Nori answers, never waking him, but showing up to his bedside to hold his hand and murmur soothing words. His day nurse, Rachel, mostly ignores him. It’s not a physical wound, so I guess she doesn’t have a responsibility to soothe it.

Ryan, the soldier who helped me to the sink, regularly comes and lifts me out of bed so I can join him at the card table. He comes to get me one day, but I wave him off.

“I don’t feel like playing,” I tell him, my voice a rough bark from disuse.
