Chapter 14: Before You Go

NORI'S POV

I’m cleaning out my locker, though I think I’m going to trash everything. Do I want the shoes I waded through blood, vomit, and urine in? No. I think the only thing from my locker I’ll take with me is the card my fellow nurses signed and slipped in there. Or perhaps not. I’m not one for holding on to souvenirs from points in my life. If I did this, I’d be drowning in keepsakes and treasures meaningless to anybody but me.

I said my goodbyes. None were particularly hard. I didn’t so much as look in the direction of a certain patient’s bed. He’d probably have to drop to his knees and say a million hail marys to cleanse himself if we made eye contact. I’m not bitter. I’m not. I’m simply old enough to have learned my lesson without asking for more pain like some besotted teenager.
