Chapter 37: We look like the MiB

MILO’S POV

As much as I want to be on my way, to keep my promise to my family, it can’t be done with the speed I’d like. Instead, it takes me another entire night to heal my injuries. Nori goes out and feeds, then returns and urges me to drink from her. She tells me my healing is astounding for a fledgling and I gently ask to stop calling me such. I won my place as princeps. No one is going to make excuses for me being newly turned anymore. Nor should they. A leader doesn’t get to make excuses, doesn’t get to be untested. Rising to the occasion isn’t an option but a requirement. She agrees, and the kiss she drops on my lips is both gentle and tinged with sadness.

“Would you take it back?” I ask her, not sure exactly what I’m referring to. The challenge. The fieldwork. Bringing me here at all.
