Cain's expression grew solemn as he absorbed the Night Prince's tale. The story of Reverend Madness struck a chord, its parallels to Cain's own life. Like the patriarch of the Gu Sect, Cain had once faced the brink of annihilation. After his battle with the Blood King, his cultivation had been gravely crippled.

Though he managed to recover, that had been during a time when his cultivation base was still far from reaching its current heights. He knew all too well how exponentially more difficult it was to recover from such damage the higher one climbed. The prospect of repairing a shattered Inner World bordered on impossibility.
