"Good evening my friend." Akin,Ajani's friend greeted him on his way home.

"How are you?"He replied.

"I'm fine, my friend and I'm even better now that I've set my eyes on you. The man of the hour! Are the rumours true?"

"What rumours?"Ajani asked, bewildered. What was the old hag going on about? 'Look whose talking?' He said to himself.

"Apekeola's marriage to the crown prince of course. I must say , I never expected someone like Apeke to end up with the crown prince. Then ,again, it does seem fitting, right? The daring Apeke and the quiet prince. "

"They must be soulmates." Ajani said, with a fake smile.

"Exactly! I'm sure even the gods agree. Congratulations my friend. I'll be on my way now."

"Bye." Ajani didn't think he was really happy for him . They hadn't crossed paths for a while. Now,he suddenly remembered they were friends. Ajani was sure he had planned the whole thing. He had probably staid close to the path leading to his house on purpose. He wanted to gain his favour because he would be royalty.

The greedy bastard!!!

....

Ajani was welcomed into his home with yet another argument between his wives.

What was happening this time? He turned back and saw his son ,Alani walking towards him. He was drunk,as usual.

Ajani shook his head at his son. What was the point of having a son when all he did was drink and sleep around? He walked in ignoring his son and his wives' banter. He had had enough for one day. All he wanted was sleep,he at least deserved that, didn't he?

....

"Home."Alani whispered to himself as he saw his mother,Abeke and his stepmother arguing, again ,as usual. He wanted to leave for his room but his mother him back.

"And where have you been all day?" Abeke asked.

"Ask him. You can't even keep track of your children."Fabunmi said.

"Where have you been?"Abeke ignored her and asked again.

"Since when do you care?"Alani retorted.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"Exactly what it does." He said and walked away. He wasn't about to be dragged into their fight. If he had learnt anything from the years of living in the house; it was to never interfere when women were arguing.

Alani was about to go to sleep when he heard an angel's voice. It was Omowumi. She had come to see Apeke ,her friend.

"She's not here ,so you can go back to your father. Shouldn't you be keeping an eye on him? You know, with him being crazy and all."Abeke said .

"He's not crazy!"Omowumi yelled .

"No, no,of course he's not. He's just a little deranged, that's all. And, then there's the bastard your dead sister left in your care. You know, your life really is pathetic."

"Mother!"Alani shouted at her . What was she doing?Did she feel nothing at all? How could she be so mean? ... He could tell Omowumi was about to cry.

"Your cruelty knows no bounds." Fabunmi said.

"Oh, please . Don't lecture me now. What makes you think you're better than me?"

She said to Fabunmi and turned to her son."And you, what makes you think you can speak to me in that manner?"

Alani couldn't bear to look at Omowumi like that. So,he held her hand and led her out.

"Come back here Alani!"His mother yelled.

"Leave him be. Then, at least one of your children would survive your genes." Fabunmi said and walked to her room.
