Styepan cleared his throat, reminding the two youngsters that he was still there. He waited a couple of seconds so that their attention returned to him, and then he talked.

«I'm here to invite you to dinner,» he said. «Both of you. Klara decided to cook, so it would be a waste to throw away the cake she'll make.»

«It won't be thrown away if Ogi eats half of it,» Neven pointed out. It was just an excuse, wasn't it? Even though it had been quite a while since the last time he ate his mother's cake.

She was doing it on purpose, wasn't she?

«She wants to meet your wo... I mean, Vera,» his father replied. «She's curious and wants to know her better. Is it too much to ask to just come to dinner?»

«So that you can bother Vera again? No way. You've done enough by now.»

«I haven't done anything yet!» his father scoffed.
