I walked down the underground street, on my way to my tattoo shop, and that's when I noticed that I had forgotten my keys.
I huffed in frustration, and kicked a pebble into a brick wall.
"Okay, time to go back and get my keys."
Then a voice from the shadows spoke to me, "You mean, these keys?"
I could hear them clacking together as whoever had them was teasing me to come get them in the dark. Ha, not a chance. I had to figure out who it was, so with the snap of my fingers, a bright light ignited out of my hands and shot up to the high ceiling. They exploded into millions of lights all floating in the air.
I clapped my hands together once, and said in a fake cheery voice, "There. That's much better. Now I can see you."
Just as soon as I took my first step forward, he covered his face with his hands, thinking that he had a chance.
As I stood over him, I knelt down and asked, "May I please have my keys? The other wolves are waiting to get their tattoos."
His face shot out from behind his hands, and he softly screamed, "You're a werewolf too! I thought you were just a witch!"
Hold on just one minute here. Something doesn't quite add up.I know that voice cannot be my ex's.
But it was.
Well, this is just great. My human ex and my werewolf boyfriend and the others are not going to be happy with him. I certainly am not.
"How did you find this place? This is not a place for a human like you, or any human in fact."
His voice stammered, and when he spoke, I knew he was telling the truth, "My dad brought me here. He said that I'd find you here. And he was right. And, let me tell you, for whatever you are, you look hot. So what's the occasion? Club night life?"
"I'm on a date."
His eyes lit up as if he thought that it was him I was talking about.
I rolled my eyes, "Not you. Remember, you ran out on our last date like a scared little girl. And you are never going to get me back. If you would have just kept your cool, maybe things wouldn't have been so awkward. For the both of us. But I will thank you for something else. I found a new man, or at least he found me right after you left. Now, don't get ahead of yourself, we didn't, uh, do the dance with no pants, but he is an animal."
He rolled his eyes and crossed his arms as if to say, wow, and I'm not?
"He's a werewolf by the way, just in case your mind already went there."
I crossed my arms as well as soon as I picked up the many scents of wolves coming our way.
Reid, my ex, seemed like he was reaching into his coat pocket to grab something in advance, but by his aura, his intentions were pure.
I waited.
He pulled out a photo, one that looked like it was worn and torn at the edges.
Tears filled his eyes, and a few tears spilled over. He looked at the picture adn handed it to me.
I took it and as I studied the two people in it, it clicked.
This photo was of us when we were just kids in preschool.
"How long did you keep this?", I asked him, not knowing what else to say.
"Since the day this photo was taken. I kept it safe in my sock drawer, you know, so nobody could take it."
Now, I'm not one to get emotional, but, I was at this very moment. And it was bad timing on his part for even being in this place, alone with me, because the pack was here, ready for an ambush.
"I got it. It's all good. He's not here to hurt us, " I said to the others.
Only they didn't seem to trust him just yet. And I knew where they were coming from. He ran out on me when he found out I was a witch, and now he comes back a month later with the man who killed the most feared criminal known in uncharted history, who just happens to hunt werewolves AND witches. And I am both for crying out loud.
So this makes things much more serious than I already thought. My ex was human. My boyfriend is a werewolf. They don't know that my sister even is a witch, just me. Oh, and let's not forget the elephant in the room, his dad was probably teaching his son to hunt down supernaturals and earn their trust.
Now, that much, I was going to get out of him. One way or another, he is going to tell the truth and the full truth, and nothing but the truth. And the truth is, I watch way too much Judge Judy in my prime with my grandmother.
But that's way besides the point. The real point is, I'm going to have him in here around the clock at my shop. So he will not have time to be nosy or trying to get away.
If he had the nerve to come back for me after what he did, he's going to find out what this world is really about. Whether he likes it or not. If he wants us to trust him, then his aura must not change for the worst. Not once.
My plan is put into action tonight.
I asked my sister Olivia if she could keep an eye on Reid for the rest of tonight in her house in the human world.
She agreed right away, which shocked me, because she hates his ever lasting guts.
Ah, he'll be fine, I thought.
My sister used some of her magic to get him away from me with the invisible rope spell that I could not do to save my life with. She yanked him lightly as if to say, let's go.
He didn't have a choice.
As Damion walked to me, he had a look in his eyes and said, "Was that your ex?"
I nodded.
"What is he doing here?"
I pointed at myself and said, "I think his dad was the one who killed Robert. And I think that he is just trying to earn our trust to get to me. He thinks that he has another chance with me, but we both know that ain't going to happen. And even if I did meet his dad, his dad would kill me anyway. So I think that it worked out for the best. And plus, I met you."
He leaned in to kiss me, but when my sister used her magic to talk to me inside my head, the message was, "You have to come with me now. It's urgent."
"Shut up, "I said.
Damion said, "I didn't say anything."
"My sister was talking to me in my head. That's how we can live without phones. It's a witch thing. You'll get used to it. Eventually."
"Well, in that case, can you speak to me in my head with your thoughts? Or are you out for the night?"
"Well, I'll know tomorrow. I just want to kiss you and not think at all. I just want to feel."
His eyes lit up and we shared a very passionate kiss that allowed me to get lost in it and feel his warmth, the taste of his lips, his tongue playing with mine, and then it happened. My thoughts, without me even meaning to, went into his head.
He broke the kiss and looked at me with new life in his glowing eyes.
"I thought you couldn't do that," he teased.'
"Actually, I didn't mean to. It just sort of happened. Whenever we get closer to someone we care deeply about, in the right moment with nothing to stop us, we can use our powers to communicate by mistake."
"Well," he said with his accent getting even thicker, as his hands wrapped around my waist and pulled me to him until there was no space between us anymore, "I guess we will have to test that theory then. Could you have done that with, him?"
I shook my head, " No, I couldn't, because I didn't love him."
Damion caught me off guard by kissing me with a force that only he is allowed to give me. Under the city, with no one else around, I held nothing back. At will, my magic told him in his head everything that I was thinking.
And now he knows the truth about how I really feel about him.
Not only do I love him more than anything on the planet, but he's the one I can trust, because he has never once lied to me.
Trust me.
