Chapter Ten: The Dark Matter of Fact:

As soon as the demon in him found out that I knew exactly who it was, it caused his mouth to grin in a way that was very unnatural for a human to do.

And then it clicked in my brain.

This wasn't a demon that hunted humans. Oh, no. This was something much, much worse.

In the witch world, these demons come from another dimension, one of which no living or even undead eyes can see. They live in dark matter.

Their powers are so dark and so powerful that not even scientists can capture or explain it, even though they know that it is there.

When I was in space science class in college, I couldn't even show my professor up by showing him that part of the universe through magic.

And that reason is because if humans could prove and capture dark matter, then the demons of the witch world would be released into the human one. And that would be really, really dangerous.

That means that witches would be exposed in ways that would be even worse than Salem times. Humans would become witch hunters, and in modern day, the weapons they would come up with could be used with magic from our very essence.

Witches would die out.

But if I myself were to be exposed, then werewolves would be hunted down as well.

The world of humans would have a fighting chance of destroying every supernatural on Earth.

And then the world would be turned to darkness, because of the dark matter demons.

I shudder at the thought of what might happen after the next day was up and I would lose all of my magic.

The demon looked at me with its smile growing in a way that made me almost throw up my magic for it.

"What's the matter, little witch? Aren't you happy to see me?"

I stayed silent, still looking at my sister laying on the floor.

The demon lined up with my line of sight and clicked its tongue three times before it spoke.

"Oh, don't you worry, she's not dead. But she will be unless you give me your magic. Every. Last. Drop."

I was about to say no to that threat, but I knew that I had one good trick up my sleeve.

What it didn't know, is that I am not a full witch anymore. I'm half werewolf, so if I give it my magic, it'll only get half of my powers, and not the werewolf side. Huh?

Well, only one way to test this theory.

I straightened out my back, lifted my head up high, and spoke with a bluff, "Okay. But there is one thing that I want in return if I give you my magic."

The demon cocked its head a little too far to the right, but it waited as if to say, 'And what would that be?'

I spoke with great honesty, "I'll give you all of my magic right now if you bring back my sister. You know, awake and fully herself."

"And how do I know that you are not trying to trick me?"

"I'll give you my magic right now and then you can bring back my sister."

"Smart little witch. Deal."

As the demon chanted in a language that even I didn't understand, a whirlwind of purple mist and smoke came out of where my heart was.

"The deed is done, and I will now wake up your sister," the demon chuckled as if I were not let in on the joke or secret.

The demon waved its hands across my sister's face and she woke with a start, sitting up so fast that she almost hit the demon's face with her own.

She screamed so loud, I wouldn't be surprised if the whole supernatural community came rushing to her aid.

And that is kind of how it happened.

A few moments later, Damion, Olivia, and Jai were rushing in to see what the trouble was.

Jai asked, "What is going on? Who screamed? Is everyone okay?"

My sister was still on the floor with a look of pure terror.

The other werewolves couldn't see the demon, which meant only one thing.

Olivia was my only witness. And I knew that my magic was gone. And that I was now either half a human half werewolf, or a full one, it didn't matter what I would say. My sister had to be the one who would explain.

Jai helped Olivia up, but was suddenly pushed back by the demon, I just knew it.

And because I no longer had any magic, I could no longer see it. I was screwed.

Big time.

And not only that, but the other werewolves were shoved as well, maybe because the demon didn't want to be caught by my now awake sister, who now knew the truth about the dark matter demons.

What a way to end the night, with the others thinking that I was the one who did this.

I opened my mouth to speak, but my sister explained for me.

"The dark matter demon attacked me. It wasn't Serenity. It also attacked her as well. It took her magic for its own. She gave up her magic to save me from death."

There were faint whispers.

She continued, "I was worried about her, so I came to check up on her, thinking that she might be in trouble. And I was right. The reason she didn't leave right away was not because she found someone else to hang out with. But because she was being hunted by a dark matter demon."

Damion spoke up, "What the heck is a dark matter demon? And what does it want with Serenity?"

The fear in his eyes as he stared into mine were so full of wonder that not even I could tell what he was thinking, because, hello, I'm not a witch anymore.

I jumped into the conversation,"I thought that I was getting prank phone calls, but I was wrong. So wrong. In fact, the phone calls were just a distraction for me to stay where I am so that the demon could get to me in time. It cast a spell on me through the phone and then hung up. That is when the demon had possessed my childhood friend, who you can't see, because he is no longer human. I think a while ago, right after I had moved states, his heart was broken, his dad wanted revenge on me, so he gave me a choice. Either I let everyone die and me keep my powers, or give up my powers and let everyone else live in peace."

The tension was so thick in the air that you could almost cut it with a knife.

Then out of the blue, Damion said to me, "You could've died. You risked your own life to save your sister's. And you also gave up your magic. That in itself is what I call, a hero."

"Yes, but now that I don't have any magic, this means that I can't control Reid and read his true intentions. So, yeah. What are we going to do with him. I mean, we can't just send him back up to the human world and we can't keep him hostage."

My sister said suddenly, "But I still have my magic, so I will keep him hostage."

We all gave her a look.

"What, I will take very good care of him."

I laughed, "Is that a good thing or a bad thing?"
