James smirked. "Finally, someone with sense."

Adeline turned her glare on him. "Don't flatter yourself, James. I don't trust you either. But until I have proof, both of you will act like civilized people under my roof."

Doctor Montana took a breath and stepped back. "Fine. But I'm keeping an eye on him."

"Do that quietly," Adeline said. "Because if you provoke him again without cause, I won't defend you next time."

She turned and walked out, leaving the tension lingering in the air like smoke.

James shot Doctor Montana a smug look, but the doctor only responded with a cold stare. "This isn't over."

James didn't reply. He returned to the vegetables, but his hands moved slower now-like he was thinking.

And Doctor Montana, though calmer on the outside, walked out of the room already planning his next move.
