Chapter 19: Complications and More Complications

“I’m not sure it’s going to be that easy for me,” I admitted. “He is the father of my baby. And the baby may be like him.”

Leena was silent for a long time before she responded. “If you both knew for certain your baby was not like him, would you want to stay together?”

I fell silent thinking about Erich’s response when I asked about that. He said what I did would be up to me. But he never said what he wanted.

“Are they going to let us see the others from Hamstead?” she asked.

“We have to wait for Erich to get back.”

“Of course we do.” She shook her head and I wondered if she now regretted staying with me in the Village of Wrythe. If she hadn’t, she wouldn’t have gotten caught up in this with me.

“Who are you hoping to find among those taken from Hamstead?” I asked.

“Just a few friends,” she said. “We grew up together.”
