Chapter 20: First Time Without Chains

I listened to him speak about the Moon Goddess and what she meant to him and other shifters. It sounded much like the religions of humans. But I’d never thought too much about it, since it never seemed as if any God or Goddess was looking out for me.

“I don’t think I’ll ever really be able to believe in your Goddess,” I confessed.

“Give it time,” he suggested. “As children we learn that the Moon Goddess created and protects us. She provides all good blessings and allows hard times to prove our faith in her.”

“Do you ever think you have faith because you grew up around all of this?” I asked, indicating the castle.

“I grew up here in the castle. As a child it’s easy to take good times and blessings for granted. But eventually I came of age and began fighting to help protect the pact. That is when I began to lean more on my faith in her.”

He traced a finger over the tattoo etchings of his chest.

“I add to it everytime the Moon Goddess allows me safe passage back home.”
