Chapter 28: Too Many Tears to Count

I hurried into the room to see Erich still lying down on the desk, but his red rimmed eyes were opened. When he turned to look at me, I could see that even through his illness, his expression brightened.

“Hello,” he said. His voice was low and strained.

“Hello,” I repeated and sat in a chair next to him. I could feel the worry in my heart heighten as I realized he looked much worse than he ever did while bound in silver chains.

“I don’t want you to be afraid,” he said. “No harm will come to you or the other humans no matter what my fate may be. I have ordered Luca to free the prisoners. They are free to return home no matter my fate.”

I blinked a few times wondering if he had heard all the way into the other room. I picked up his massive hand on my own. It was cool and clammy, a sharp contrast to the warm firmness I was used to.

“Thank you, Erich. I am so very relieved to hear that.”

I turned to look at the Beta who nodded his compliance. Erich looked at him as well.
