Chapter 38: Heavy Lies the Head

When I arrived, Leena and Lilith were loading three women into a carriage while five other women stood with Fya looking upset. I turned to the guard flanking me hoping that things weren’t getting out of hand.

Leena came over to meet me and let me know what was going on.

“They're getting restless,” she began. “They say that with the barracks so empty now, it’s cold and creepy at night. They think it might be haunted.”

“Really?” I asked.

“Yes, they all want to move now and don’t understand that houses are still being built and we can only move three to a house right now. Also, not all of them want to find work to help pay for their cost of living.”

“Are there jobs for them to do?” I asked.

“Yes, not the most glamorous work. Like here on the dairy farm, but they don’t want to have to travel this far out every morning and they think it’s prisoner work.”

I grimaced at that. “What kind of work is there in town?”
