Erich found me one evening in the sitting room looking over swatches delivered for the nursery. I thought it would be the perfect time to pull him into some of the decision making.
“Hello,” he said, walking slowly into the room.
“Hey,” I replied. “Morine sent these over from her shop so we could start working on the nursery.”
He gave a half hearted smile, but I could see worry in his face.
“What’s the matter?” I asked crestfallen that he wasn’t more excited about preparing for the baby.
He gave me a kiss and then let out a sight as he reached into his pocket.
“I wasn’t sure if I should give this to you,” he began as he produced a folded letter.
I took it in my hand and held it for a long time, looking at the broken Bokstein seal.
“What is this?” I asked, feeling a sense of dread fall over me at the thought of opening it. I wanted nothing to do with my former in-laws.
