Chapter 43: Moves and Counter Moves

“No,” Erich admitted. “But I don’t expect him back for at least a few more days. I trust Luca with my own life.”

“But haven’t you stopped to consider—

“No, I haven’t!” He cut me off but the look in his eyes said that he indeed had. “If he led me into that trap then why would he bother searching for me until he traced me to your village?”

“I don’t know,” I said, admitting to myself that the Beta put a lot of effort and emotion into looking after the Alpha. “But he’s gone to deliver this message to my father, and there’s trouble with a reference to the Bokstein fortune. It can’t be a total coincidence.”

“It’s not Luca,” Erich insisted.

“But, it is someone in the palace,” Fya said solemnly.

“We need to find a safe place for you to stay until we can root out the culprits,” Erich said looking at me.

“I don’t want to go anywhere by myself,” I insisted.

Erich looked conflicted. “I need to stay here and wait for Luca.”
