Chapter 44: The Worst Laid Plans

It was an hour before sunset when the second carriage arrived with strict order from Alpha Erich to bring us all back to the palace.

I gave Fya a teary eyed smile and then a most grateful hug. I almost asked her if she was certain she didn’t want to stay at the palace permanently.

We loaded into the carriage and I happily bounced around knowing that me and the baby would be back in Erich’s arms tonight. The exhaustion of being out all day caught up with me and I fell asleep as the sun completely vanished and all went dark except for the moon beams that spilled in through the carriage window.

A sudden jerking stop of the carriage almost bumped me from my seat onto the floor. I heard a low growl coming from Fya as she struck a match and lit a candle. She dropped the curtain over our window and fixed the inside latch to the door.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Rogue shifters,” she said just as a high pitch howl pierced the air.
