Chapter 47: The Aftermath

After giving our witness statements, and a medical professional examining Aubrey’s wounds, we were offered a ride in two additional cars back into the city of Heraklion: one with Aubrey and Chandler, and the other with Tyler and me.

I stared out the window, seeing the trees pass by in a blur and eventually transforming into historical buildings and shopping strips. What Joseph had said as he was getting into the police car stuck with me, even long after they were gone, and the longer I dwelled on it, the shorter my fingernails got.

“Are you okay?” Tyler asked, stretching his hand to meet mine in the middle seat.

I looked to Tyler and gave him a gentle smile, trying to ease his concern. “I was when you asked me as we left the Karydaki Aqueduct, ten minutes ago when you repeated your question, and I still am now.”
