Chapter 5: Fenri

"Finally awake are we miss star child?" Asked the green haired young woman beside Asteria's bed.

Hearing this Asteria tried to reply, but rather than words all that came out was a horrible rasping sound.

"You shouldn't try to speak yet. Whatever it was that attacked you did quite a number on your throat," she said as she pushed Asteria back towards the bed.

"Honestly it's a miracle that you survived this long, considering how far you must've walked to get here," she said as she pulled out a tablet.

"Do you know how to write?" She asked. Asteria nodded her head. "Great then you can talk with this for the time being." The woman said as she pushed the tablet towards Asteria.

Grabbing the tablet Asteria began typing. [Where am I] she typed out before showing the screen to the woman.

"Right now you're in one of the urgent care rooms of the West Gate clinic in Alpen," she replied.

[Who are you]

"I'm Doctor Fenri Jensen, one of the doctors at this clinic, and I'm the doctor in charge of taking care of you until you recover."

[You called me star child, what does that mean]

Reading this, Fenri tilted her head slightly. "That's strange, monsters are usually born with a basic understanding of what they are, but that doesn't seem to be the case for you... how intriguing..." she said as she moved closer and began to inspect Asteria.

Noticing Fenri coming uncomfortably close, Asteria panicked and swiped her hand forward as a blade of light extended from her fingers.

Fenri quickly dodged backwards before putting her hands up beside her head. "I'm sorry, my curiosity got the better of me for a moment and I got closer than I should have," she said with an apologetic smile.

Asteria realized what she had just done a moment after she had done it and blushed slightly in embarrassment.

[Sorry]

"It's fine, that was my fault,"

"Anyway, to answer your question, a star child is an extremely rare humanoid monster that is born from pools of mana under starlight. They are usually fairly weak, but if they absorb enough mana they can eventually grow into a celestial. With a few steps in between of course," she said.

"Their abilities are mostly related to light magic, and they almost never leave the place where they were born,"

[How did you know I was a monster?]

"That's because of the skill analysis. It's an E rank skill that was created and distributed by the Adventurers Guild to just about every rookie adventurer along with their IDs. Since you didn't disguise your information along with your appearance Elliott was able to see your name, level, and class. Since you're a monster it also showed you as a D rank monster," she explained.

"Thankfully it was Elliott that found you. If it had been anyone else, they probably would've hunted you for materials, or sold you off to some rich creep."

Hearing this, Asteria shuddered. She had somewhat expected something like this after being attacked when she first woke up, but what she hadn't expected was for people to see she was a monster despite her looking like a normal human.

However this brought up another question in her mind.

[If thats the case, then why did you help me?] Typed Asteria.

"Well that's simple," said Fenri as she showed Asteria a blue window much like her own.

[You're a monster?]

Fenri nodded her head. "Yup, and I've been living amongst humans for most of my life," Fenri replied.

"Anyway I do have some things that I need to ask you, are you feelingup for that?" Fenri asked.

Asteria hesitated for a moment before replying.

[Sure] she typed.

"Alright then first question, can you tell me the last thing you remember?" Fenri asked as she moved her chair towards a computer.

[I remember falling on the ground and people shouting to each other] Asteria replied.

Fenri typed something into the computer and continued asking questions. "Do you know your name?"

[Asteria]

"Do you know your last name?"

[No]

Fenri continued typing.

"Do you know what the date was when you collapsed?"

Asteria thought for a moment before deciding to say what she thought.

[January 6th, 2011]

Seeing this response, Fenri frowned. This was a date from just a few days after the first cataclysm that had saturated the world with magic and monsters. It was also a date that didn't exist.

The actual date would be somewhere around 2041 if they had continued using the same time measurement. Of course this would've been impossible considering how much the planet had changed. Since the world had expanded and been infused with magic, the days and nights became longer and the number of days in a year had changed.

Due to this the world had decided to name a new era. As a result, they were now in the year 31 of the new era.

Fenri was very confused as to how a monster which seemed to have been born only a few weeks ago at most would even know about that time period, but she decided not to ask since she was a doctor and not an investigator. Instead Fenri explained the current date to Asteria.

This of course shocked Asteria somewhat, but she had seen many strange things in the past few days and was already used to the feeling.

After saying this, Fenri shone a light into Asteria's uninjured eye, and determining that she didn't have a concussion, decided to ask the question that she was pretty sure she already knew the answer to.

"This is the last question, and since I was pretty sure I already knew the answer I only gave you emergency treatment..."

Asteria had a sinking feeling as she heard this. And her calm demeanor was crushed as she heard the following words.

"Do you have health insurance?"
