45. Busted

Trent’s eyes widened. ‘How did he do it?’ He shrugged and walked in.

‘Ouch, thanks for holding back, Dad.’ Troy knew better than to walk in after having been addressed indirectly like that.

He had stopped being amazed at his father’s ability to tell who was outside his study door years ago.

As Trent closed the door, Troy stood in the passage looking out into the grounds that surrounded the house.

He had wanted to build Eve a house like this. He had bought the land and had wanted to surprise her on their anniversary.

He sighed. ‘Even if I build it now, who would live in it with me? My kids are going back to England, my wife will be in America with her new boyfriend…and I will have to deal with gold diggers and Eve-wannabes.’ 

‘Fuck, how did I mess this up so badly? What did I do to deserve this?’ He had learned to ignore the pain that he initially felt when Eve came to mind.
