52. The Reveal: Say Hello to Your Daddy

Trent tore the envelope open eager to see what the results were. He read and re-read. He opened the top right drawer on his desk.

The wood slid apart smoothly revealing a deep red velvet interior. A small black box with a rose embossed under the velvet.

His jaw set in a grim line.

He knew what he had to do. It had to be executed with tact and his foe defeated with skill. A quick glance at the clock above the door to his office told him his first patient was waiting.

He stood closing the drawer with a little more anger than he intended to display. He picked up his white lab coat and went to his consulting room.

Hours later he said goodbye to his last patient and got a big hug from the young blond boy.

The toothless grin and earnest green eyes reminded him of his nephew. He hugged the boy back and ruffled his hair. His mother thanked him and took her boy's hand.

Once again, he was alone in his office. His mind drifted to the envelope sitting on his desk.
