The Pit Fiend

"Did you hear that, Captain?" Yun's gaze narrowed as he peered into the depths of the pit.

"Loud and clear," Alaude said while seated on the corpse of the baby T-rex they almost encountered earlier.

The creature was riddled with rocky spikes that decorated the mass of its body. And its head had been severed off completely.

"He doesn't have a weapon nor a gear," Yun folded his arms across his chest. "We need to help him or else he will die."

"Given that he's new, I understand you have no faith in him," Alaude shrugged.

"That's not what I'm trying to imply here, Captain. We should help him," Yun argued.

A soft beep emitted from the communicator strapped to Alaude's wrist. The device projected a holographic visual that reflected blue digital text on a black surface.

The Captain's expression became grim as he received the report which read: "Surveillance squad has returned. Seven dead, nine injured. The South Gate has been breached."

"We have two problems," Alaude's intense gaze met with Yun. "The South Gate has been compromised and we have more dead from the surveillance squad."

"Again?!" Yun exclaimed and clenched his fists. "How many does this make now that we've lost in the last three months? I don't understand why they're attacking our scouts."

"It's a fight for territory," Alaude scowled. "The problem is, where the hell are they situated? Our scouts are dead and the injured ones never seem to have any memory of what happened. How do we work with that?"

"What will you do?" Yun returned his attention to the depths of the pits. "Something we have not encountered before in this pit has surfaced."

"The South Gate needs my immediate attention," Alaude jumped off the T-Rex's corpse. "Fenrir is a soldier. He can handle it himself."

"With no weapons or gear?!" Yun blurted out almost angrily.

"Then what do you suppose I should do? If the inner south gate is breached next, we're done for."

Yun had begun to protest but he had no counter against the Captain's valid point. Why was the timing so darn great?

"Then go," Yun said as he turned away from the Captain."I will stay here."

"If you enter that pit, there's no point to this test. You can stay and watch the visual through your system. We've already seen that he was doing well thus far."

"There is little light, I cannot see what is happening clearly."

"If the situation is dire, you may enter. That is an order, Yun," Alaude commanded sternly before he took his leave.

"Aye Captain," Yun responded.

Fenrir was cautious enough to re-activate his survival shield. But would he prevail against the creature that emerged?

'Perform analysis.'

"Level 15..." Fenrir watched the Pit Fiend reveal itself in the scant light provided by the flame jewel. "How much mana did he pump into that..."

The Pit Fiend towered into view with a large, greenish body that effused a nauseating stench. A silver, double-edged ax with a yellowish liquid that dripped from the blade was swung over its right shoulder.

"There is limited information on this one..." Fenrir took a few steps back.

The creature's face was far more disgusting and hideous than its minions. Scrunched up with scars carved across its eyes. The Pit Fiend greeted Fenrir with a mocking cackle as several more of the Barbed Devils scurried through the hole in the wall and surrounded the Garrison soldier.

"Bold of yer ta ent'r my domain e'r?" The Pit Fiend cackled again.

'The ugly bastard talks...' Fenrir made a mental note. 'Upgrade ultra observation skill.'

[Survival skill (passive): Ultra observation skill has been upgraded using 2 skill points]

[Ultra observation skill has evolved into the Level 3 survival Skill: Ultra scotopic vision]

The silhouettes of the creatures in the shadow gradually became clearer and their movements were easier to trace than before.

"Devouring darkness," Fenrir outstretched his hand and utilized the skill which was directed toward the Pit Fiend.

The surrounding Barbed Devils were reduced to bones; however, the cloud of Necromantic Energy dissipated around the Pit Fiend's body.

[Twenty level 3 Barbed Devils have been defeated]

[Total exp gained: +60]

There was no visible effect, nor did the creature appear fazed by the attack.

[Pit Fiend status effects: Energy Nullification]

[Pit Fiend has cast a status effect that prevents damage from skills containing any specific types of energy]

'What other status effects does it contain?'

[Magical armored barrier detected. Pit Fiend is temporarily immune to physical damage]

'Physical and magical attacks don't work. Is there any way to remove the status effects?'

[Status Effects have a duration and will automatically wear off until the user re-casts them.]

[Current status effect duration of Energy Nullification: 20 mins]

[Current status effect duration of Magical armored barrier: 8 mins]

"So it's a matter of speed..."

"Yer startin ta bore me um'n," The Pit Fiend drew closer as it gripped its weapon firmly.

The creature lifted the weapon and slashed it down on the ground which released a massive wave of black energy in Fenrir's direction.

Even with the protection of his shield, he barely rolled out of its trajectory. The ax caused a massive fissure in the ground and the black wave of energy blasted against the opposing wall which shattered from the impact.

'View unlocked skills,' Fenrir ordered the system.

He swiftly browsed through the unlocked skills he acquired during his level up as he restored his balance on the ground.

[Mana capacity: 51/43]

[Continuous Survival shield usage drains small portions of mana over time]

'Not good,' Fenrir deactivated the shield and sprinted towards the other end of the pit that was clear of any creatures.

"I will defeat you one way or the other."
