This time, Axis asked a question that Card didn’t anticipate.
“What does it mean to be Human…?”
Even after repeating the question, he was still at a loss. It wasn’t because the question was difficult to answer; in fact, there were many answers he could have given, from humorous ones to serious ones. The complication was found within Axis’s eyes as he asked the question, his expression pleading for the answer as if it were a solution to a complicated puzzle. There was a lot of hope he was putting into Card’s response, which added weight to the simple question.
“Well,” Card began, “everyone has their own answer to that question, based on the knowledge they gain or what they experience over their years of living. In other words, the answer to your question depends on your own true nature, and therein lies the problem…”
