She felt her phone buzzing for the fourth time in an hour. She knew who it was, and she couldn’t bear the thought of speaking to him. She’d only started dating Christian a few weeks ago, but he’d been trying to win her over for two years.
When they’d met, it was still way too soon. She was walking around life in a haze, constantly feeling the ache of loss in her chest. She was regularly at the courthouse, sitting in on trials of people she’d investigated. Christian was a new detective, fascinated by her demeanor. He was floored when he learned who she was.
She barely noticed his presence. She didn’t notice anything outside of the stories she worked. It was the only way she could survive the pain she felt. He would send flowers and chocolates, before realizing all she really wanted was information. He switched tactics then, slipping her leads and classified information for her pieces.
