A Taste of its Dominance

If she had wings, she would fly. Unluckily, she had legs. Chief Ayn sped to the Lake House, Rinzler's message had been clear. "A storm is coming, quickly, get everyone far from the Lake." Of course, she called to ask but the call went to voicemail. Fucking network!

Although speedy driving wasn't her forte, she couldn't care less. She honked at the driver in front of her who suddenly found the road impressive and took his sweet time. Instinctively, she thought of blazing the siren. Facepalming mentally, she cursed lowly after remembering she drove to the Fishers Pack in her car. Driving to the fishers pack in her chief vehicle would send a wrong message.

"Get out of the road."

Instantly, the driver moved aside. She sped past while her mind wandered to her daughter and why they suddenly left. She couldn't figure out Marina no matter how much she tried. How she was her daughter's friend was a mystery to her. Her phone vibrated, the leader of the rescuing team informing her they were at the Lake House already.

When she arrived outside The Lake House, she left the car running and headed inside.

"Ma'am, I am so happy you are here." The man informed her.

"Yes, Arik, what is with the screams?" Chief Ayn said, eyes darting around the divers who were dressing up.

"The screams are coming from the lake and others from Mariville."

Her eyebrows furrowed together; she just left the pack, had something occurred after she left? She shook it off, they will handle it. Luna Audra's voice came into her mind, "if it is between your people and I, always choose your people." Disheartened for leaving her friend alone, she ignored the last part and asked, "why are people screaming from the lake?"

"An incident," Arik said, leading the way. She looked behind, "everyone, get ready. Hurry, hurry." Chief Ayn walked behind him as she typed a text to Doctor Bedelia; What is happening there? And can you please ask Audra not to howl, please?"

Returning her phone, the scene in front of her made her countercheck. "What the hell?"

"Yes. Hell, indeed. This is why everyone is screaming and panicking."

Chief Ayn stared at the waves in front of her. It was huge, never in her mortal life had she seen anything like that. To make it worse, it had come when most humans were getting water for domestic purposes. For those inside the water, their containers float away. Basins and sandals washed away. Hell, if it was not for how tight the parents were gripping their kids, she was damn sure they would be floating away too.

A howl came.

Chief Ayn rubbed her face. Was it wrong for her to send that text?

"Ma'am, the teams are ready; we will start the rescuing mission…" Arik paused and stared at the woman screaming about their basin with the eyes asking, "are you seriously crying for your basin?"

"Okay." Chief Ayn responded.

"We are here sir." One lady said from behind them.

Chief Ayn spun around and announced the usual drill in case of an accident in the lake. She could see the panic in their eyes, which fueled her calm more. Moreover, if she joined them in their panicking state, they will be dead meat.

Five teams started running towards the women with kids and walked them far away from the lake. Another team came where Chief Ayn was talking to a pregnant woman whose shape had taken a different turn. "Come, nurse Wesson, help me. Thank you." Chief Ayn rubbed the woman's back as they walked her further and further away from the shore.

Another howl came.

The pregnant lady shivered. "Hey, focus on your breathing. Okay?" Nurse Wesson said softly. Once they were at a safe distance, she nodded at Nurse Wesson and sprinted back.

It was not a good time for Chief Ayn to lie to everyone that those were just dogs. People's safety was the important thing. Later, she will pay a visit to the weatherman and ask why the hell they were not told there was a storm coming, just a cover-up to show how irritated she was for them not to dig into the uncharacteristic sudden turn of events.

She passed some kids who were talking.

"It is coming from Mariville?"

"What?"

"Woah. Mariville has some cool dogs."

"Hello. Come here." The kids walked towards her. She squatted in front of them. "Where are your parents?"

"We came alone."

"Okay. come along. I will get you someone to take you home." Chief Ayn gaped at the lake.

"Chief, I read in a book that is wolf…"

Bobbing her head sideways, "no, that is just a dog, a bad big dog."

"No. I know how to differentiate…"

"Hola boys, follow me." A man with a life jacket on said to the kids.

A relieved sigh escaped her lips. "Saved by the bell." She mumbled. She looked around, no one stood near the lake. The coast guards and the divers were well trained. In addition, everyone knew how to swim. For half of the night, her focus stayed on getting everyone safe at home. Arik was the last one, "hey, get some sleep."

"You seem tense, are you sure you are okay?" Arik asked for the hundredth time.

"Yes, thank you." Chief Ayn stated.

As she drew closer, the howls got clear. With years of driving back and forth to the Fishers Pack, Chief Ayn had no difficulties propelling in the dark. From a far distance, she saw a car with its lights on, a smile broke on her face, "I am glad she came back."

But alas! How wrong she was. She got out of the car. "Hey, what are you doing here?" Seeing it wasn't who she thought, she paused.

"Ayn."

"Rinzler, wolves can fly?"

A low chuckle emitted from him, "is Marina in there?"

Sadness swept on her face, "no one told you?"

Panicking, he thought of the worst. Worse than rowing in the lake with the help of a mere lamp and dimly wolf sight. He swallowed, "what?"

"Hey, don't fret. She left abruptly; I don't know why."

"Thank you." Rinzler got into his car, mumbling an apology at Chief Ayn for leaving abruptly. No way he could spend the whole night without seeing Marina. His body yearned to hold Marina, his mind singing, "killed by Marina, saved by Marina."
