First and foremost, it was the truth.
But what mattered the most was what Rose would think of…? Why did it matter to me–she was free to feel whatever she wanted to feel. It was not my responsibility to assuage her or anything.

"A little distracted?"
"I'm more surprised that you were looking for me." I admitted. "Normally, you'd be busy attending to your princess."
"W-well, why wouldn't I not be concerned? That person you were capturing was from the kingdom of Averon. If you had let her go, then my princess' life would be endangered and we'd be put at risk."
"Ah, that explains it." I chuckled. "You don't have to worry about it, I've got everything handled. I'm far more reliable than you think I am."
