Chapter 9

Paula and Merlin were losing hope to find and proof against Jenna's father everyday.

"He is so clean. Work to home, home to work. He doesn't even stop at the sight of a bloody hot ass like mine." Paula was saying to Merlin as they sat in the hall of their office apartment.

"Maybe he is gay." Heena said from her desk.

"Heena, he left Jenna's mother for a woman so he is definitely into women." Said Paula.

"Do you mean you tried to flaunt your ass in front of him?" Asked Merlin with a non surprised look. He knew this was her sister, taking advantage of every quality to get what she wanted.

"I have to meet Jenna to update her on progress so far. See you at home."

Paula walked out on the night streets of Ginger-Spring town, silent and mysterious. She always loved this town, it was one of her favourites so far. Even the attack of vampire hunters didn't change its smell. It still smelled of wet mud and dry grass. Paula turned on the corner of Jenna and Merlin's street and saw the house they shared. It was painted white and yellow and had a slanted rooftop with a small garden at front.

Small yet gorgeous.

"Well well well. If it isn't the one and only Paula Bale." A rough and dry voice had her stop in the track and she turned to see the pack of more than fifteen men and women.

"Hello doggos." She said with a mocking smile and waved casually. They all turned to each other with a smirk and looked back at Paula.

"The nerve. Despite being alone. I appreciate it Paula, I really do." One of the women came forward. Her steps are long and predatory, her eyes sharp and face stiff and unhappy.

"A  pack of werewolves only to see me. To what do I owe this pleasure?" Paula asked and the woman in red shorts and black leather jacket stopped in front of her.

"Haven't you heard of vampire hunters? They are haunting the town, I was worried about you."

"Well haunting is a big word, isn't it? I am not scared. And what are you even here for, to guard me?"

"Not to guard you, but to talk to you. Have you forgotten we have an irreparable relationship?"

"Yes I do Zara. I can't forget a sharp tongue and a wanting wet p—"

"Stop right there Paula. No need to remind me of those dark time when I was young and stupid who fell for a hot female vampire who was a incapable of relationships as a zombie for taste of wine." Paula laughed, throwing her head back and clapped her hand loudly in the deserted street. Zara glared at her.

"As charming as always. Let's go for another round, shall we?" Paula said gently, sliding her arm up to Zara's shoulder. Zara slapped it away and closed the remaining distance between herself and Paula.

"One of our pack members disappeared last night, he was last seen in the alley near Uthopia park. We have reasons to believe that vampire hunters have a hand in that and they are targeting us werewolves too."

"And what reasons might those be?"

"I am not going to reveal my sources to you Paula. We must join hands to find them, that's the only way."

"You can relax Zara, I don't forget a good old friend. How about I come meet you at your place in a couple of days. I am sort of busy right now." Paula said and Zara nodded.

"Private  investigation Agency and stuff. I have heard." Then she stepped back and turned to where her pack stood, all confused and waiting. Within the next eight seconds, they were all gone.

Paula shifted her gaze to Jenna's house and, there on the door she stood, clothes rumpled and hairs messy, as if just out of bed. She wondered what drew her out of the house.

"Hey." Paula greeted as she walked towards her with long strides. "Did we make a lot of noise?"

"I heard some murmur." Jenna said.

"Sorry about that. Can I come in?"

Jenna gave her way to enter the house and into a small living room with an average sized sofa and circular wooden table. To its one corner was the kitchen.

"Sit please." Jenna said and took her place on the other corner of the sofa. Paula followed her lead.

"I am sorry if I am intruding but I have to ask. Who was she? She looked intimidating."

Paula laughed and crossed her legs before saying, "One of my old flames. Generous lady."

"I am sure she was. So, what's the update?" Asked Jenna.

"Your father is as clean as kids on the twenty fourth of December. We got nothing."

"Well then keep trying. He isn't a freaking angel."

"We will. We of course will but I am just putting it out there that your father might have actually changed." Hearing this, Jenna shot up from her seat and started pacing in front of Paula. Paula waited for a minute and two before speaking up. "Don't stress. We can build some evidence if you want. Prove it to your mother that she is wrong to trust your father and you will win. Easy."

"I don't want to win, Paula. I don't want to probe my mum wrong. I want real proof that he hasn't changed because people don't change, for real." Jenna was almost shouting now.

"What is happening? What's wrong?" A woman of the age close to Jenna came out through one of the doors in some horrendously sexy night gown and loosely knotted bun.

"Nothing honey, just my dad. Go back to sleep. I will be back in a minute." The woman, giving a slight nod to Paula, left.

"I am going to assume that was your girlfriend."

"You guessed it right Paula now what do we do with my dad?"

"He is still living in your mother's garden, so we will keep looking. Still consider my option of setting him up."

"Not happening Paula."

"Alright. Alright." Just as she was about to leave, her eyes caught the sparkle of an invitation card. Without permission, she picked it off the table and read the date. It was for the very next day. "Is this one of human parties?" She asked looking to Jenna.

"You know it sounds weird when you say it like that. Yes it's a human party due tomorrow."

"Can I come?" Jenna thought about it for a few seconds before nodding. "Sure. Why not? I know the address so you can take this card for— that."

Paula grinned widely and walked out of the door with spring in her shoes.
