Chapter 36

The end of the week came faster than I wanted it to. I spent the majority of it in Miss Emily's office and in my room doing homework. The first two days after my suspension I'd finally convinced my parents to let him come over. I was still grounded, with the exception of George. I sat on my windowsill, with my windows wide open. Dawn fell, filling the sky with shades of oranges, reds, and purples. I listened to the sounds of the forest and wanted to run in it. Experience the wind on my skin and the ground underneath my feet.

"Damned hunters," I grumbled.

I heard a car pulling up in the driveway. My head sank. The moment I had been dreading for the last 4 days had finally come. Reluctantly, I stood up and went downstairs. Half-way down the stairs I heard voices. One I didn't know, and another I hadn't heard in years. "Kain. You grew a beard?" Grams asked in her New Yorker accent.

"Yes, mother," my dad sneered.
