Chapter 20

After arriving at the hospital, James ran inside with the paramedics, but as soon as they crossed the doors to the ER, the nurse had stopped him.

"I'm sorry, sir, but you can't come inside."

"But that is my wife there. I need to be with her."

"I understand you, sir. The moment that will have the result, the doctor will come to you, don't worry. She's in excellent hands right now. Just sit down on the chair and wait for the doctor." James knew he can't fight a nurse, so he went to sit on the chair in the waiting area. The front door opened, and the two detectives has arrived to company him.

"How is she, son?" Detective Howard asked.

"I don't know, the nurse told to wait here for the doctor. I don't won't to lose her and the baby, but if I'll have to choose, I'll choose Maddie." James held his head in two hands and just sighed to himself.

"Does your family know what happened?"

"No, I haven't told them. I'll tell them when we get home."

After an hour, the doors of the ER opened, and a doctor came out of there.

"Family of the patient, Maddison Davis?" He heard the doctor say. He told the paramedics on the way to the hospital that she's his wife, even though he didn't ask her officially.

James got up from the chair and approached him. "I'm her husband. How's my wife and baby?"

The doctor sighed and smiled at him. "I'm glad to say that your wife is doing good, and we saved your baby. It was really close call there, but we saved them both. We are moving her to a room. I'll let a nurse guide you to her room."

"Thank you, doc, thank you so much." The doctor smiled at him and then left. James turned around and faced the two detectives. "GOD, thank you for your help to save her. I'll be in forever grateful to the both of you. The moment that any of you will need help that required our help, just let me know."

"You are very kind, son. I'll keep it in mind. Well, now that she is doing well and your baby is alive, we wish you good luck and a safe drive back home." James thanked the two detectives and watched them leave the hospital.

In a half hour, a nurse came to James and took him to her room. When James entered the room, he could see how tired she was after a long week in the hands of that bastard, but now she's with him and their baby was growing. James sat down on the chair that he has put near her bed. I hope she'll wake up tomorrow! He thought to himself and just sat there and watched her until he felt his eyes can't hold him any longer, so he went to the couch that had been in her room and lay down there to shoot his eyes down for few hours.

At the next morning, Maddie woke up and saw a white ceiling and then tried to look to her left and to her right. When she look to her left, she saw James sleeping on the couch. She tried to call him, but her throat was dry, and she needed water.

Maddie saw a glass of water that stood on the table next to her. She sat down slowly and reached the glass of water and took a small sip.

"James?" Maddie watched as James opened his eyes. She saw him getting up from the couch and approaching her.

"How are you feeling, my love? Do you need me to call the doctor?"

Maddie shook her head and spoke. "No, James. I'm doing good. How's our baby? Is he…"

"No, my love. He is doing amazing actually. The doctors saved you both."

Maddie sighed in relief, and finally her tears had fallen down her cheeks.

"Oh, my love. Don't cry, I'm here now with you and I'm not leaving. I think it's time for me to leave the Marine Corps, because I don't want to leave you alone anymore."

"No, James. Don't do it. I know you love your troops. You can always come back every day. When do you think we can leave this city?" Maddie was ready to leave this damn city forever, she only has terrible memories now from this city.

"Let's see what the doctor will say. If he says that you are OK to leave so we'll get to the car and drive back home. I have sent my men back already."

"I can't wait to see your parents and Drew, and Dekota, Bill and her twins."

James was about to answer her when the door opened and the doctor that saved her and a nurse.

"How are you feeling, Ms. Davis?" Maddie looked at the doctor with confused eyes and then at James, who tried to avoid her eyes and his smile at the sound of it.

"I'm feeling good, Doc. When can I leave the hospital?"

"I was just about to tell you that your blood test came clean. Your baby is growing healthy, so keep it like that. Mr. Davis, you can go with the nurse to sign the release documents and leave whenever you are ready. Have a safe trip back home."

"Thank you so much, doc. For saving my wife and our baby. I'll be back soon, my love." Maddie nodded and watched him leave her room. Maddie smiled. She liked the status that James made the doc believe.

James returned soon with the paper of her release.

"Whenever you are ready, my love."

"I'll get dressed and we'll leave. I don't want to stay here any longer."

James left her room so she could get dressed and waited for her. After a few minutes, the door opened, and Maddie came out. "Let's go home."

Maddie entangled their hands, and they left the hospital. As they left through the doors of the hospital, Maddie remembered something.

"Does the police catch John?"

"They did. You don't have to worry about anything anymore."

"Before we leave, I want to meet the detectives that helped you."

"Sure, let's go." They entered the car and drove to the police station.

In half an hour, they arrived at their destiny. They got out of the car and went inside the station.

"Can you tell me if detective Frost is in his office?" Maddie smiled. She really wants to thank them for everything and for saving her.

"Yes, sir. I'll let detective Frost know you are here. Wait here, a minute." They could hear the receptionist talking on the phone with the detective. "Detective Frost said that he's coming to see you."

"Thank you." Maddie and James sat in the entry area and waited. "James? Why the doctor thought I'm your wife?" Maddie raised an eyebrow at him.

James felt his cheeks heating when he heard Maddie's question. "Well… I was afraid that they won't let me in to your room if I told them I'm just your boyfriend. Don't be mad, OK?"

"I'm not mad, James, I liked it actually." James smiled and kissed her cheek.

"James. I'm so happy to see you guys. How are you feeling, dear? Your boyfriend was terrified when he saw you falling down the stairs."

"Thank you, detective Frost. I'm feeling much better now. I've rested enough. What is going to happen now to John?" Maddie got curious suddenly.

"We have him in custody right now. We have a lot of questions to ask him about the other women that didn't have the luck and got killed. Your boyfriend gave as a copy of the documents that you had about John. We are doing our investigation now. If we find something, we let you know."

"Thank you, detective Frost, we'll be in contact." Before the detective could say something, they heard the sirens in the station go off and one of his officers comes injured.

"What is going on? Call 911 NOW!" Detective Frost yelled.

"The prisoner… The prisoner grabbed me by surprise and… And took my gun away and shot me. He's looking for these two. You should be careful. He's crazy." The officer lost consciousness because of the loss of blood.

While helping the officer, they heard some gunshots that were coming closer and a man yelling.

"WHERE IS THAT BASTARD THAT TOOK MY WOMAN AWAY FROM ME!!!

Maddie shook out of fear for their lives. The man that was yelling is John Brown himself.

"MADDIE!!! WHERE ARE YOU? YOU STUPID WOMAN!" They saw John as soon as he stepped forward with the gun that he stole from the officer.

"Try to take your girlfriend away without him noticing you. GO!" Detective Frost told them and moved toward his office to hide but stopped in the middle when he saw them moving.

"You are going to pay Maddison for betraying me, so today you both are going to die by my hands like I did with those other women that I killed. Ha ha ha ha ha…" John laughed as he pointed the gun at Maddie and shot it. Maddie screamed the moment John shot the bullet, but she screamed because James stood between her and the bullet.

"JAMES…" Maddie fell on her knees and tried to stop the blood that was coming out of him. The bullet that James took for her hit him above his heart. Maddie didn't want to lose the only man that ever loved her with no condition and that had fought with her, no matter what. Please GOD, don't take him from me. Maddie prayed while they waited for the ambulances.
