Chapter 28

Jorge and Ivy were rushing towards me. Anger sparked inside me. They had also betrayed me. Lied to me. Lured me into that. I wanted to run away from them. But despite myself, I stayed.

"Oh thank God you're alright. I thought they would keep you hostage for some time." Jorge said.

"At least I didn't turn anyone in." I said, very angrily.

"Look, its not what you think, we-"

"YEAH. THAT'S WHAT YOU DO. MAKE PEOPLE TRUST YOU. DARE THEM TO A RACE, EAT ICE CREAM WITH THEM AND TAKE THEM IN A RUSTY SHOP OWNED BY A CRACKPOT WOMAN WHO BARGAINS AND THEN GET AMBUSHED BY PEOPLE AND PRETEND TO-"

"JUST STOP!" Ivy was the one to speak this time. Amidst my fury I had forgotten she was there too. She looked furious too. Jorge's face was flushed. He opened his mouth to say something but closed it again. When he couldn't find words to explain, Ivy spoke:

"We didn't know either, we took you there to get you a gift. I know we said 'don't bargain' but technically stealing isn't bargain you know," she said ending it with a sentence intended to make the whole situation funny.

There was a long pause. We could not meet each other's eyes. They had definitely not betrayed me. It was obvious. Their reply made that clear. But I questions to ask them.

"Did you sort of forget what you were there for?" I asked.

"Good question. But you see," Jorge spoke. He paused and started again, "Er...might not make sense but we had been given instructions. Not like ti get you there. But like, we d-don't know how, but they s-sort of got i-inside our head and we had to."

I know he couldn't explain how. Of course, to them it was probably similar to instinct or intuition. I nodded to show that I understood and trusted him.

"FYI, it's called 'codal instructions'. They add them in our code temporarily." Ivy spoke for our benefit. She could've passed for a programmer herself.

I decided to put my trust in them. They were my only hope. They knew these streets like the back of their hands. I was just an imposter here. I need to survive and get out.

"I have something to tell you two," I began. They both looked up at me.

"You see, I'm not your Alpha. No one messed with my code. I'm someone else- I mean I'm a human. I think I know what happened to your previous Alpha but I-I swear I'm not involved. I need your help to get out of this game to go back to my world." I said, nervous that they'll consider me off my rocker.

"I trust you,"Jorge said. That was a relief. I looked at Ivy.

"Ok, I'm in. I feel bad for you. It's weird you are not part of the game and all this, but yes, I'll trust you."

I was about to thank her but she spoke again.

"One one condition. You take me too."

That demand wasn't what I had expected and I was curious why she wanted to leave too but for now, having them both on my side was more than enough.

"Um...I'm not sure if you'll be able to come back. "

"I don't care,"

"TAKE ME TOO!" Jorge said. Yes, again I was surprised. I nodded anyway.

Jorge smiled.

"Tell us what to do,"

"You expect me to explain standing here in the middle of the road? Let's go back to the HQ."
