  The Overdue Wedding Night

  With their little fingers curled around each other, she swung his arm as they traipsed down the hallway to her apartment.

  He took the keys from her hand and opened the door. And as she worked off her coat, he pushed the door shut and waited.

  Like time never moved on, they stood there as awkward as the night they met until Tessa’s thumb pointed behind her. “Are you staying with me?”

  A smile cracked on the side of his mouth. “I would like that.” His finger lifted between them as his other hand grasped the doorknob. “I’ll go gather my things. I won’t be long.”

  While his mist spread from under the doorway, she rushed through the apartment, flicking her shoes from her feet. And when she got to the bathroom, she wiggled as she bent her arms behind her to unzip her dress.

  Her fingers wiggled until she heard the clawfoot tub filling with water, and she dug through her top dresser drawer for her backup black nightie.
