Just like at the time he first was going to Diagon Alley, he couldn't sleep at all waiting for his first day at Hogwarts. He already spent his days waiting for the day to come by preparing for his time at Hogwarts. Whether that meant by reading books or imagining what Hogwarts was like, and what sort of people he might meet there.
Unlike at his school where he went to before, he actually applied himself to the books. He was still greatly confused at the content but hopefully in time he will start to get it with the teacher's help. He packed his trunk a day before and sadly, he didn't get a pet but he was hoping that he would get one in the future. Owls sound very useful for communication and cats just sound like another way to destress or they were a way for Nicholas to have a new partner.
Soon as it was time, Nicholas rushed to his mum to drop him off at King's Cross Station. His father was not at home because he was at work and seemed even more cross with Nicholas ever since he found out he was a wizard.
Shrugging off the bad feeling, Nicholas practically had to pull his mum out of the house so they could get to the station faster.
Once they got to the station, Nicholas and his mum had a heartfelt hug between them. They never have been so far apart before. While his mum was strict at times, Nicholas knew that she was really kind inside and cared for him. He just didn't know why his father acted the way he did around him. It was always a problem he could never figure out.
Once they hugged, his mum had to go because of work.
"Now even though we will be apart for awhile, I better not hear you get into trouble at school understood? I'll miss you Nicholas." Nicholas was shocked at that and he couldn't see the tears that were welling up in his mum's eyes as she was walking away from him.
Determined more than ever now he started walking towards platform 9 3/4's he spotted a boy all by himself with his own set of Hogwart's supplies on a cart. He was initially relieved because he thought he would find the platform easier if he could follow him but quickly took back thought once he saw that the boy was just as confused as him.
Figuring out two heads were better than one, Nicholas approached the raven-haired boy in glasses with green eyes.
"Hi! I was going to follow you the platform thinking you knew where you were going but I was wrong eh? Want to search together?" Nicholas asked and the boy was surprised at first, but slowly his eyes calmed down and agreed with Nicholas.
"Sure let's do that...My names Harry Potter. What about you?" Nicholas was confused why Harry was quiet but dismissed it as he introduced himself as Nicholas Ward.
"Now, where is this darn magical platform! We're literally in-between platform's 9 and 10!" Nicholas exclaimed while Harry questioned,
"Maybe it doesn't exist? You think they gave us the wrong ticket?" Nicholas considered this for a second but shook his head.
"Can't have been. I reckon that the platform is secretly hidden from muggles and there must be some sort of hidden passageway to get there." While he was thinking of a solution he see a group of red-heads walking together. He wouldn't have paid it any mind but what caught his eye were the items they were carrying.
"Harry! Look over there! Those group of red-heads have Hogwarts supplies! Let's follow them and see where they go to!" Harry only nodded in agreement because he didn't have a better solution so he decided to just follow what Nicholas was saying.
They followed them until they saw two of the red-heads that looked like twins disappear through a wall. Both Nicholas and Harry's eyes widened in shock.
'How many bloody walls are magical?! Come on!" Nicholas complained in his head. After all the red-heads went through the wall. Nicholas and Harry followed them worried they might lose them if they strayed back too far. In a rush, they ran too hard and as soon as they went through, Nicolas quickly braked while Harry crashed.
Looking at Harry, Nicholas started laughing, "HAHAHA! How did you even fall? You're a special one Harry!"
Unlike Nicholas, Harry started mumbling that he didn't mean to or that it was a new experience. Unfortunately for him, Nicholas didn't hear any of his excuses and continued to laugh. Harry was tired of this and grabbed Nicholas and dragged them to the train to find a compartment for themselves. They found an empty compartment and sat down with Nicholas still giggling.
Harry sighed, "I'm never going to live that down aren't I?"
"Nope! Never in a million years! You'd have to kill me before I let you forget about it!"
"Maybe I should..." Harry mumbled under his breath.
Seemed like Nicholas didn't hear him, or at least ignored him by saying, "Well, since we're friends now I ought to ask what house you want to be in? I'm thinking anywhere's decent to be in, all have their qualities and the sort."
Harry looked shocked for a second, "Friends? We're friends?" Nicholas just looked confused at this.
"Of course we're friends! We got along with each other till now without any trouble and what's wrong with us being friends? If you're my friend then it comes with a life-long contract unless something unforgivable happens cool?" He held out his hand to Harry waiting for a response.
Harry was just staring at his hand. 'I've never had friends before...Just Dudley and his friends and Nicholas here seems genuine. He's the first one to do so...' With that thought Harry smiled widely and shook Nicholas' hand.
Nicholas also smiled widely at this and decided to try something new.
"As a sign of our newfound friendship, let's make a handshake shall we?" Harry just nodded in response since he was new to this.
"Hmm...Here let's try this..." Nicholas shows the handshake to Harry and surprisingly, it goes pretty well for their first time. "You think that's good enough? I didn't want to make it too long."
Harry was just touched at the fact he made his first friend and was still smiling widely. Nicholas noticed this and smiled inwardly as well but said to Harry, "I know I'm pretty good at making handshakes, but it doesn't mean you smile like a dope because of it."
With that Harry's smile instantly disappeared and huffed, "Well you just ruined that moment for me." Nicholas just laughed at this. "Well I'm not really for those emotional moments you know? Keeping it mellow." He does a wavy motions with his arms while Harry just shakes his head at Nicholas' antics. 'What a great first friend' Harry first thought. 'But I'm still grateful to have him.'
And with this thought, Harry smiled again.
"You're smiling like a dope again"
Harry just reddened and started to hit him.
"OW! I WAS JUST TELLING THE TRUTH! STOP! I WILL-" Before Nicholas could finish speaking a new voice spoke out.
"Excuse me. Do you mind? Everywhere else is full."
"Go right ahead. The more the cheerer...wait, that's not how it goes.." Nicholas says while he's thinking hard about what the correct phrase is. While Nicholas was thinking, Harry and the new kid named Ron Weasley were introducing each other.
Harry introduced Nicholas and then himself. What Ron said after brought Nicholas out of his thoughts when he hears Ron say, "So-so it's true?! I mean, do you really have the..the.." he stutters.
Nicholas decides to join in at this point of the conversation.
"The what?"
Ron is practically whispering at this point. "The scar?" He asks.
Nicholas was confused at this. "Scar? What's so great about a scar? And how do you know about this scar? He famous or something?"
Ron just nods in response while Harry shows his lightning-shaped scar to everyone in the compartment.
"Wicked-" Ron stares.
Nicholas just started chuckling and said, "So did you fall to get that one too or was is another reason?" Harry hit him in out of embarrassment.
They trio talked more about how Harry got his scar from Voldemort and while Ron was freaked out by the name, Nicholas didn't seem to mind. Other than that, small chit-chat was being made.
A knock disturbed their conversation. They all swiveled their heads to look at the door to see a woman with a trolley asking if they wanted anything from it. Ron declined saying he was all set with his sandwich that his mum packed for him. Harry on the other hand brought out a couple of galleons and said, "We'll take the lot."
Nicholas and Ron's eyes widened at this.
"I didn't know you were rich Harry. Maybe I should find a new first friend." Nicholas said jokingly, but Harry didn't even react to the joke because he was expecting that sort of comment from Nicholas.
While Harry and Ron started to go for the candies, Nicholas asked Ron, "If you're not going to eat the sandwiches, mind if I have them? Not really much of a candies person cept' for the occasional chocolate."
Ron gaped at this. "Not a candy person? Are you mad? I can't believe this!"
Nicholas just shrugged. "Nothing mad about being a little mad. Also, I need real food to grow big and strong." At this comment Harry and Ron just rolled their eyes and started to eat their candy. One point in time, Harry opened a chocolate frog package which contained Dumbeldore, the Headmaster of their school. Nicholas wondered how powerful Dumbeldore was and was imagining scenarios in his head where Dumbeldore was striking a pose with his flowing beard on top of a dragon.
He sees a rat sticking its head inside an empty jellybean box which broke him out of his fantasies.
"This is Scabbers by the way, pitiful, isn't he?" Ron asks as Nicholas immediately responds "Sure is. Sorry mate."
Harry glares at Nicholas while he replied to Ron, "Just a little bit. " Nicholas just shrugs because it was true either way.
Rons grabs Scabbers in his hand and says, "My brother Fred gave me a spell to turn him yellow. You two wanna see?"
"Sure. Why not?" Harry says as he glares at Nicholas daring him to say anything else. Nicholas just rolls his eyes and pays attention as well.
Ron rummages around in his trunk and pulls out a very battered-looking wand. It is chipped in places and something white is glinting at the end.
Nicholas opened his mouth to comment on Ron's wand but before a single word could come out Harry jabbed his elbow in Nicholas' ribs. Nicholas grunted in pain but Ron didn't seem to notice since he continued to speak.
"Unicorn hair's nearly poking out. Anyway--"
He starts to clear his throat as he raises his wand.
"Suns-"
Before he can finish, Nicholas sees a young girl occupying the doorway.
"Has anyone seen a toad? A boy called Neville has lost o-" She stops mid sentence as she saw Nicholas' face.
"YOU! I DIDN'T FORGET THAT DAY! APOLOGIZE PROPERLY NOW!"
Nicholas was baffled at this. "Wait wait...What happened? I don't think I've ever met you before?"
'What's up with her tone of voice? Sounds familiar...Oh no...' He starts to remember as the girl starts to go on a rant about how he crashed into her in Diagon Alley and ran off without properly apologizing. Harry was listening very closely with a smirk growing on his face getting bigger and bigger with each passing detail.
'So he likes to make fun of me about falling huh? Just wait until I get him about this...'
Nicholas stops her rant by saying, "WAIT! I CLEARLY REMEMBER APOLOGIZING BEFORE I RAN! ALSO, I THOUGHT I WAS RUNNING LATE! I WAS IN A HURRY SO MY RUSH SHOULD BE WARRANTED!"
She starts saying that it was not a proper apology and that he should maybe even give her a letter on how much he means it. He was outraged at this. 'She wants me to give her a LETTER as an apology?! She's a different kind of crazy!'
"A letter? Are you serious? I'd rather eat Scabbers over there than write an apology to you!" While saying this Ron shouts "HEY!" but was ignored by the both of them.
They started to fume at each other and was so close to the point where their forehead's were practically touching. Harry, realizes to stop this from escalating any farther says, "Ron's about to do magic! Want to see?"
This snaps the girl out of it and looks at Ron's wand. "Oh, are you doing magic? Let's see then."
Nicholas was shocked at her change in attitude. 'How did she just change her atmosphere in an instant?' While thinking about this Rons starts his spell.
He clears his throat again starts to wave his wand.
"Sunshine, daises, butter mellow, turn this stupid fat rat yellow."
The box flies off the rat's head, but nothing else happens. Nicholas puts on a deadpanned look.
"Wow Ron! That was an amazing spell! I can see the change clear as a crystal!" Nicholas said sarcastically. Ron just rolled his eyes at Nicholas but the girl said, "He's right, that can't be a real spell. Of course I've only tired a few simple spells myself-but they've all worked for me. For example-"
She sits down next Nicholas who in turn scoots away from her and across from Harry. She points her wand at him and cries,
"Oculus Reparo!"
In a small flash, the battered glasses from Harry's glasses is repaired instantly.
Harry takes them off and stares at them in amazement. The girl gasps as she sees the scar on Harry's forehead.
"Holy cricket! You're Harry Potter! I'm Hermione Granger!"
Nicholas chuckled at that and said in a sing-song voice, "Holy cricket!"
Hermione blushed and sent a withering glare at Nicholas but seemed to have no effect. She ten turned to Ron and saw him and the state of his face and had a disgusted look. "And you are..?"
"Um, Ron Weasley." He replies with a stuffed mouth.
"I'm Nicholas Ward in case you really wanted to know." Nicholas said and Hermione didn't even turn her head to him. "Hello? I think the 'proper way' when someone introduces themself is to introduce yourself as well."
Hermione almost yelled, "I did introduce myself! I'm Hermione Granger!"
Nicholas just smiles at this and says, "I must've forgot about that. I'll try to remember this time."
Hermione just grumbles at this and gets up to go out.
"Well, you three better change into your robes, I expect we'll arrive soon. She informs as she gets ready to lave the compartment, "Oh and Ron, you've got some dirt on your nose." She wrinkles her nose in disgust before quickly leaving.
Harry and Ron are flabbergasted as they openly stare at the door she left, while Nicholas was laughing at Ron for the dirt on his nose.
"Well, she was something wasn't she?" Harry asked the both of them and while Ron just nodded his head while Nicholas shook his head, "You have no idea. I'm already tired of her and it's only been five minutes."
