The whole time going home in there own carriage there was unbearable silence . They were given their own homestead. It was a wedding gift and one would think a lot could be discussed going there but absolutely no talking was done by either of them as they were both thinking their own thoughts. Eric Phantone was now her husband and she was now Mrs Phantone but how can she bare this beast who was a tormentor the whole voyage here from England. He on the other hand was thinking of the wager he had going with his cronies as his true person was a privateer or putting it bluntly he was a pirate. It was in a very boring dingy inn in Germany that had him wagering he could seduce a high born lady and bring back three bags of gold and show the other pirates he could have anykind of woman he wanted. They were laughing at him and saying he was so attractive but could he manage to land a lady and leave her after a genuine marriage. The marriage he accomplished but can he get his hands on enough money and could he get away in one piece. That was the big question in his mind going around in circles with him trying to work out How he was to proceed further....
She decided to be the one to talk to him and show him she was a good person and ask him about himself. She did not expect him to jump down her throat the way he did and accuse her of 'Talking to her father' about him. All she did was ask him about his parents. It seems he was a bit shy about his family but that skowl on his face showed other thoughts he was not going to share with her.
She was tired and the long journey plus the very extravagant wedding has her pooped out with tiredness. She had no idea where this homestead was but just before sunset they made it to the most adorable white washed cottage and as the carriage stopped the coach driver told them they have arrived at their destination. The candle lights were already burning and the servants or slaves came outside and lined up outside the building in two lines as was the custom of the day when greeting your new masters. Not that she actually adhered to the belief that slavery was ok no she was an abolitionist and believed all men were equal. When she said as much to her aunt back in England she was made aware that saying slavery was wrong made a young girl unpopular in social circles.
Esme was now married but she definitely did not want to sleep in the same bed as her new husband even if that was customary for newlyweds to do so. Eric on the other hand glanced over to her side and peeked at her wondering if he could enjoy his first wedding night. Looking at her he thought if she let her slightly reddish hair down she would be very attractive in a bookish sort of way.
He was not going to fight about conjugal rights right now no he was definitely not as he was tired and wanted to go and sleep but only on his own tonight. He needed to think up some plan of how he was going to get his hands on her money as he did not want to overstay this marriage thing. He was officially married but just because he used his real name did not mean that he thought of himself as legitimately married for real. How wrong he was about everything that has happened in the last few days as he had assumed he could just marry and then leave quickly with the loot. This proved impossible seeing that Esme's father had posted a personal guard especially for him. The guards reported to a captain and this captain came to the house the same night that they arrived. The captain apologized about the intrusion but according to Esme's father he wanted them under special protection because of the 'raiders' in the area. Eric Phantone was not a happy man as he realized what this means her father was keeping a close watch on him.
Eric had his crew out at see but now he was forced to do something he never contemplated doing. Farming was definitely not his fortay no not at all.
He never got to have his wedding night consummation no his skittish bride proved to be a very angry one female military on her own. He was not going to risk her weapon even a secret one can do a lot of damage he did not want inflicted on his person. When he was awoken early the doorman informed him he had to plow the land with oxen and what a sweat driving operation that proved to be...
Farming is definitely the pits as far as any job is concerned but if you were a privateer it is even worse. A life of adventure verses this hardship was definitely not so great. Especially seeing the Captain's men stationed around him as her father must have been a neurotic monster that he was. Eric also realised her father was a wise man. With the very impressive Mountain in the distance Cape of Goodhope was an impossible beautiful place to be. The Table Mountain was a large outcrop in the distance. Even knowing the sea is not far away did not make it easy to endure this stupidity of becoming a farmer but everyone assumed he wanted this life why would he have married her in the firstplace. In this assumption he had to endure the hot sun and so much work for the next four weeks early up in the morning and late to bed. He had no time to think about romance only this informal heat and work definitely not easy. He was never known to tolerate this work thing for long as the sea was in his blood.
