Chapter 47

The ground shook as a cavalcade thundered down the lamp-lined road in the middle of the night. The tremors could be felt all the way in the imperial palace.

The blackwood carriages, adorned with both the crests of House Ihar and House Bale, stopped before the main castle, where the emperor's bedchamber was. The horses snorted excitedly, stomping the ground.

Gilliard Bale and Maximilian del Ihar stepped down from their carriages before the attendants even had the chance to move.

The emperor, hearing the news of their arrival, rushed to meet the two exhausted men.

"Gentlemen!" he cried, embracing them warmly.

"Your Majesty."

"You must be weary from traveling all this way. Welcome, welcome."

The other noblemen also greeted them as they walked into the great hall. Their soldiers trailed in after them, rather disheveled, carrying a huge chest.
