Clasping her ripped shirt closed, Lia looked away from Claude's eyes. She was the one who had been struck across the face, yet his warning that "the price must be paid" was meant for her.

"Lord Claude," Marilyn began, "it's not Sir Camellius's fault. He misunderstood me and got a little too worked up." The gracious smile she wore made it obvious that she was delighted to feel Claude's attention on her.

Claude moved his gaze from Lia to Marilyn. "A little too worked up"?

Marilyn nodded. "I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I had to confirm that he was really a man. I realize my actions were disrespectful. He only pushed me to the bed because he mistook my intentions. I was shocked, so I—"

"Slapped him."

"Yes. I was such a fool to think that it would be all right for a lady to be in a room alone with a man," Marilyn said, leaning into Claude's arms.
