Right after I finished reading the effects page, red tinted prompt appeared, overlaying the effects page. It read,
"Due to the effect [BLESSING OF MASTERY] the holder is allowed to choose [4] starting Job Class(es). Please choose now, or this opportunity will never be given again. Lol, get rekt."
I stared at this panel for a good 25 minutes, thinking about what the best classes to pick would be, when I had a little epiphany. I don't give a flying rat about whether I'm supposed to be here to be a hero; I'm just gonna pick what I want, and hope that what I have in mind will work how I think it does.
I scrolled down until I had found the 4 Job Classes that fit what my favourite powers from my teenage imagination. Swordsman, Assassin, Water Mage, and Shadow Mage. Once I picked my starting 4, I noticed that each Class had a smattering of subclasses. For instance, Swordsman had subclasses like: Greatswordsman, Dual Wielder, Longswordsman, Sword and Sheild. Hopefully I don't have to completely level up each class and every subclass associated with it.
Oh, gods please don't make me do that. Pleeeeeease!
Signing off on the first entry on this power thingy. I'll call it The Chronicle.
James Skylia, 5 years old.
"Jaaaaames!! Don't be a shut-in! You might have passed every basic information test we gave you, but that doesn't justify researching who-knows-what in your room all day!" My mother, Laenette yelled from outside my door. "Besides, you still need to be in the habit of physical training if you ever want to get into a high division of the school!"
"I'll be right down!" I responded
Even though I've had my memories for the past 7 1/2 years, those few where I was a baby or a toddler and just physically didn't have the mobility or dexterity to do anything were excruciating. I even got measles at one point, but at least them I could subtly tell my parents what to do. I've only recently been able to get into the routine I wanted, where I practice swordsmanship during the day, and on my free time I try and work on my magic. Even though the leveling is slower than I expected; my Swordsman class is only level 5, I think I'm still on track to be able to get a couple of max leveled Job Classes by the time I'm 16. My parents had to hire a tutor to train me with a sword, but I've been developing my magic alone. I discovered that being a Water Mage allows me to control water, so I've been trying to increase the amount that I can move. Progress is very slow; I think I'm missing some of the basic techniques.
"So, even though you've got a handle on the basics of being a swordsman in appearance, you lack the basics of what I call the 'Combat Mentality'" explained my tutor, whose name is Lucan. "The combat mentality is how you think during a battle scenario. It requires more mental prowess than even solving complicated mathematics, as you must keep track of your opponent's movements, remember what moves they overuse, and consider the location of your fight, and the location of others around you. I can't tell you how to do this, as every warrior has their own unique way of overcoming this obstacle. The only way is to teach you through experience."
He tossed me a blunt wooden sword, and said, "We are going to practice in the woods today, it is the best way to teach you to remember your surroundings even if there isn't anyone else around."
As soon as I followed him into the forest, he jumped at me, sword raised in a powerful downward stroke. As can be expected, I was incredibly surprised, and just barely jumped out of the way. I tried swiping at him, but I missed by a mile. He followed up with a bunch of short swipes, forcing me not continue backing up, as my mind was racing for a way to get around his longer reach before he pushed me into a tree, or worse, and animal. Ironically, just a fraction of a second after I realized that he was trying to back me into a tree, what do ya know, my heel hit the wood of a massive oak. I ducked down as far as I could, banking on him thinking I would fully back into the tree and go for a "killing blow" to my neck and swung as hard as I could into his shin. He yelped and backed away, and I took the opportunity to take the advantage, and stabbed straight toward his stomach, and started trying to advance away from the tree.
"You've got more of a handle on this than I assumed." Lucan said as he stumbled back and tried to recover. "I should be ashamed, a swordsman should never underestimate their opponent, and even if they can't use their full power, they should still try to consider all possibilities."
He stood up, fast as a mouse, and masterfully deflected all of my strikes, standing his ground. We both knew that if I wasn't able to push him backwards, I was doomed to lose. I spotted a little patch of water on the ground, probably from the light sprinkle this morning, and decided to put my "undercover" training to use. I told myself, 'You've already moved that amount of water before, you can do it again. Nothing has changed. Just connect with it, make a link, and MOVE IT!"
The water flew across the humid air, and Lucan's eyes flashed toward it for a split-second before it crashed into them. He instinctively closed his eyes, and, realizing his mistake, he haphazardly whipped his sword up, trying desperately to block an incoming strike, but he had swung it too far, and the point of my blade just barely touched his neck, winning me the spar.
"You little... Your parents didn't tell me that you could use magic!" He yelled with indignation.
"Of course they didn't, they don't know themselves." I responded. "But didn't you yourself say that a warrior had to consider all possibilities?"
"Yes, I did say that. I didn't mean come up with preposterous stories of a 7-year-old knowing how to use water magic, if even at a novice level though!"
"Well, I can sooo... And by the way, can you kindly not tell my parents? They might freak out, them being the overprotective parents they are."
"Do you not know? Even if you're young, I would've thought you would have heard that all mages are required to attend school the local academy, even if you don't understand the reason." Lucan asked.
"I did hear about it, and that is precisely the reason why I'm asking you to not tell my parents. As I said, they are very overprotective, so they would foam at the mouth if they knew that their 'sweet baby' was going to get sent away to the academy." I explained.
"Very well. As a reward for defeating me this practice, I won't tell your parents about your magic. Now, AGAIN!" Lucan yelled.
