Chimeras

"So you still have no idea who that cat was?" Blue asked as she poured me a drink.

"Still no clue. He hasn't come back and everyone I've asked doesn't know about any cats living here." I explained as I drank the milkshake Blue poured for me.

"Most cats that live around here are big cats like lions and tigers, so it isn't surprising. Do you want to describe him again, maybe he has been in here before?"

I tried to remember the details of the cat boy. "He was a calico cat and was quite small even when he was human. His eyes and expression made him look so timid and scared."

"So you're looking for a shy cat boy? I wouldn't have guessed that was your type."

"What? I'm not looking for him because he is my type! I'm just curious why he was at my house."

"Let me guess, it was exciting to chase him?" She asked with a mischievous grin.

I didn't know how to respond because she had hit the nail on the head. In the last few weeks, I have spent on this island, there has been nothing more fun than chasing that cat. It felt weird but at the same time normal.

"Don't worry it's perfectly natural. When you are a hybrid you get urges that most of the time seem completely abnormal, but it's just your animal side. Why do you think I'm selling my milk?"

"Thanks I feel a lot better now, Blue."

"It's always a pleasure to help one of our treasured customers, but you might want to be careful. There is a lot of animosity towards chimeras."

"Why? What's a chimera?"

"There a hybrid who can turn into more than one animal because their parents are of two different hybrid species?"

"I told you, it's not like that!" I could see Blue chuckling to herself as she said it. "But why don't people like Chimeras? Turning into two animals sounds cool."

"Well there is a lot of bad history with chimeras and most people see it as unnatural. Personally, I don't like the idea of judging someone based on what animal they are."

"Have you ever met a chimera?"

"No, I haven't. It's sad to say but most chimeras don't live much longer after their first transformation."

"Why? Is it because they can't transform properly or something?"

"Unfortunately that isn't the case. Chimeras are usually killed by their parents as soon as they are discovered. It's cruel and disgusting but to be honest if they do survive it isn't long before they will be beaten to death by someone who believes they don't have the right to exist."

There was an awkward silence between me and Blue, the once happy and playful mood had turned sombre. I could see her hands scrunched up into a fist and her expression portrayed all the disgust she was feeling.

"Sorry that I went and spoiled the mood." Blue apologised and tried to put on a smile again. "It's just people like that piss me off."

"Don't worry, I can see where you're coming from. I don't blame you for being angry."

"Anyways you should be heading home, your first day is tomorrow and you need all the sleep you can get for the exam."

"Wait, there's an exam!"

"You didn't know? Don't worry it's all on basic stuff that you would have probably learnt in a normal school."

"Don't scare me like that." I let out a large sigh of relief. "Ok, I'll head home then."

I paid Blue and started to head back home.

It had been a rather uneventful three weeks. I mostly just hung around at the blue cow and explored the town. I had kept in touch with Mom and Kyle but Rose had yet to ring or text me back. Her radio silence annoyed me but it's not like I could do anything.

When I got home my phone started buzzing, it was a text from Kyle.

Kyle: Hey Kate want to play online together

Kyle: ???

Kate: Sure (◐ω◑)

Kyle: (＾-＾)

Kate: But I can't play for too long

Kate: I have my first day of school tomorrow

Kyle: ( •_•)

Kate: So what do you want to play

Kyle: Idk

Kate: How about we play overview?

Kyle: (＾-＾)

I played with Kyle for 4 hours, I meant to only play for an hour at most but I forgot how fun it is to play with Kyle. One of the things I missed the most was spending little moments like this with mom and kyle.

Kyle: How long have we been playing

I looked at my phone's clock to see it was 2:03 am.

Kate: I'm gonna have to go Kyle

Kate: I'll make sure to text you tomorrow after school

Kyle: (－_－) zzZ

Kyle: Make sure you text mom tomorrow

Kate: Will do

Kate: Night

Kyle: Night

I quickly ran upstairs to brush my teeth and make preparations for tomorrow. I set my school uniform next to my bed, so I could easily access it in the morning and I set an alarm on my phone for 7:30. School started at 9:00 but you had to walk through a forest to get there so I planned on getting up a little early.

Once everything was ready, I drifted under the covers of my bed and finally fell asleep.
